. WEDNESDAY, JUL_Y9, 1915 THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL LUCKNOW, ONTARIO PAGE TWELVE
4his Week in Ripley The Bruce County
Local Government Study BY AB WYLDS
Last Wednesday, July 2, fire,
breaking out in the hay, spread
quickly in the barn of Howard
Harrison on concession ten west in
Huron Township.
Ripley Fire Department was
summonded but the blaze was
beyond cc•ntrol. In fact, in less than
a. half hour, it had spread to the
tenth schtiol-house-nearby and the
second fire truck was called out
from Ripley.
Noticed on the first run out to the
firm of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison
were Ray Fuller driving the tank
truck and Clarence Pollock driving
the new Ripley fire truck. Then,
when the siren sounded for the
second time, all the firemen ;wse
out so Doug Martyn of jaiStligh
drove the old Ripley fire truck out.
By this time the blaze had spread to
the school house roof. Howard had
fitted the old school as his work
shop. During the afternoon the
three fire, trucks made several trips
back to' Ripley to , refill and the
firemen were able to save the home
for Gwen, Howard, Sally and
Kevin.
Word has been received here
that Rhoda Howard, daughter of.
Mr. and Mrs. Michael Howard of
Pointe Claire, Montreal, was
recently appointed 'assistant pro-
fessor of Sociology at the UniverSity
of Alberta, Calgary campus, with
her.duties to commence in Septem-
ber. A year ago when Rhoda was in
Africa, so was Dan Rose, formerly
of Lochalsh, and it was noteworthy
that in such a huge place as Africa
they met and discovered that they
both knew the Ripley-Huron area.
Back in the late forties Dan played
softball here while Rhoda attended
'the Ripley District High School in
1963-64. After here, Rhoda
attended Niagara Falls Collegiate
and was awarded a major, scholar-
ship to attend McGill University in
Montreal. Here she was awarded
all her degrees and also took
several large scholarships. Ripley
area friends wish her well in
Calgary.
East Friday, Miss Jean 'MacDon-
ald of Ripley joined the staff at the
Pinecrest Nursing Home in Luck-
now. Jean was employed at the
Kincardine Home before it was
. moved to Southampton.
With nice warm sunny weather
prevailing last Friday, the teachers
of the Ripley School held a
noon picnic in Gore Park and the
children' enjoyed a play' day
program under supervision on the
soft green grass. This was an
enjoyable end for the second week
of this year's summer school. By
the way, it will continue up to
August •29. This is the third year it
has been held. The girls who are in
charge are to be complimented on
their excellent work with the young
girls and boys, who range from 2 to
10 years in age. A school day goes
from 9 to 3.10 in the afternoon, but
most mothers call' for the younger
children after dinner. The student
teachers for this year are Barbara
Grubb, Julie Reeves, Debbie
Peterbaugh, Debbie Beard, Kathy
Moore and Cathy Creech.
It was interesting to notice the
attention which Donnie Fludder's
motorcycle attracted on Thursday
morning as it was parked on the
driveway here. Especially did, it
draw the attention of those driving
past to work at the Bruce Nuclear
Plant. Donnie and Carol went to
Kitchener on Wednesday evening
and brought it back. It fooks so
different with its high chrome front
and two wide spaced rear 'wheels.

The hot weather of the past week
was the kind in which honeybees
decide to split their colonies. Two
swarms landed in the shrubs near
the home of Donald and Kathy
Farrell on the tenth concession-
west of the fifteenth in Hum
Township this past week end:

THE
RIPLEY REUNION
Composed by .a former Ripley
student and Huron native.
in Huron Township rests a. town,
loved by many folk;
Its streets are filled with fellowship.
and blessed with peace and,
hope.
It's a place so dear to many, be-
cause it is their home,
And ne'er will they forget it no
matter where they roam.
Located near Lake Huron, for
everyone there's fun,
With lots of snow in winter and in
summer so much sun.
Pollution is unknown there - air and
water so clean,
In this big world such' precious
things are seldom seen.
So many happy faces, so many life-
long friends
They know that their relationships
will ne'er come to an end.
For some, however the time must
come when they feel they have to
part,
But they always take that little
place with them in their hearts.
And so this year is special for those
who've gone away '
For August first to fourth will be 'a
memorable holiday.
Yes, that's the big Reunion for all
Old Girls and Boys,
When they, will get together to
share past and present joys.
To all of you who read this poem,
.no matter where you be,
Don't forget that week end, and all
- the friends you'll see.
Everyone will be there, for many
miles around;
So don't miss the fun in Ripley at
the Reunion of our town!
Mrs. Jim LOwry of Ripley is at
present in Kincardine Hospital
undergoing treatment for a cardiac
condition. Ripley friends wish
Marie recovery and a return to her
Ripley home. ,
Ripley was a busy spot last
Sunday evening with a men's
intermediate ball game in the park
and a reunion meeting at the. Ripley
Huron Central School at the ,same
time.
