Three other out buildings went up in flames.. The fire broke out about 1.45 p.m. during haying operations and resulted from a hot bearing on the. In Top. The barn was about half full of hay and contained some grain. , Also lost was a 10 by 10 colony house and a 20 by 40 hen house, both east of the barn. Destroyed also was the old S. S. No. 15 Huron School, used by Howard as a work shop. Same tools were lost, .but Hqron Forni many were saved from the school. Ripley-Huron Fire Department, using both trucks and the water tanker truck, fought the.fire. The only additional water supply was a well near the barn which' was inaccessible because of .the fire. The house, while threatened for a time, was saved. The climax of a very successful Bikeathon took place at BrOokside School on Monday night of last week when each of the three sponsoring organizations was pres- ented with a cheque for $175188, their share ,of the approximate $5300: that has been received 'to date. Mrs. Barry Hackett, secretary- treasurer, told the Sentinel that more money is still coming in and a few more hundred dollars may be the final total. Walter Arnold accepted the money on behalf of the Lions Club; Jim. Morrison and Brian Johnston on behalf of the Kinsmen and Herb Wilkins on behalf of Ashfield Recreation Committee. The three organizations were high in the praise of the 193 bikers who pitched in to make the event such a success. W. July 1. Miss Jacques*, a bilingual tele- phone operator, said: "I didn't know whether to laugh or try." "I • wasn't 'thinking in either French or English when my name was said. I just went blank." Miss Jacques represented North- ern Ontario in the annual competi- tion. She .is 5-feet, 4-inches tall, weighs 114 pounds and has brown hair. As Miss Dominion of Canada she is eligible , to enter other beautY contests such as Miss Universe and Miss World. The first runner-up was Jacquel- ine Wilson, 19, of Napanee, representing Eastern Ontario, Second runner-up was Mary- Du- Bois, 22, of Niagara Falls; repres- enting the Niagara Peninsula. This year's winner is Flora Simpson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duncan Simpson, R. R. 3 Goderich, with an average of 89.3 percent. The value of that scholarship is about $130 Retires From Service After 21 Years Bob Morton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Morton of Lucknow, will retire this month after 21 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force. Bob has been stationed at Sept Isles, near Labrador.. Mr. and Mrs,.
