ub 'installed their new 1975-76
ate of officers ' at a joint
stallation meeting with the .Kin,-
Horticultural societies through-
ut OntariO will - receive , additional
nancial 'assistance this year
hrough a doubling of their annual
rants. The increased' grants are
art of several changes announced
y the Honourable Willim A.
Stewart, Minister of Agriculture
and Food, in the Horticultural
Societies Amendment Act, .1975.
Prior to the amended Act,
orticultural societies qualified for
an annual maximum grant of $500,
depending on membership num-
bers; The levels have been
clfanged whereby a yearly maxi-
mum grant of $500 is available to
societies with 100 members or less;
a $1000 yearly grant to societies
with 100 to 200 members; and a
$1500 grant to societies with more
than 200 members. Where a new
soeiety is formed, the first year
membership grant has been in-
creased from 50c a persbn with a
$75 maximum,. to $2 per member
with a $200 maximum.
Societies which have been in
existence for more than one year
will now receive grants based on $1
for each member for the previous
year, and one-half of the eXpendi-
tures incurred during the previous
year. "Under the amended Act a

or donated labor to be considered
as an expense within a society to
one-quarter of the amount expend-
ed.
In making the , announcement,
the Minister emphasized the ex-
panindg role of the horticultural
societies in the community. "They
have been, a great catalyst in
bringing all levels of the commun-
ity together in a common bond, a
common interest.
"To strengthen further the role
of all citizens throughout Ontario in
the societies, the amended Act now
allows young people under 16 years
of age to become associate
members for grant purposes. As
well, a society in a territorial
district or provisional county will
only be required to' have 25
members, not the 50 indiViduals
previously required for Member-
ship. This will make it easier for
some societies to get established in
Northern Ontario," added Mr.
'Stewart.
