A
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Speaks In Suppor
Of Part Time
Farmers In Area
R. R. 3 Holyrood, Ontario,
June 12th, 1975.
The Editor,
Lucknow Sentinel.
Dear Sir:
About two weeks ago, one article
made mention of a study of the
impact of part time farmers on this
region. Specifically, the authOr
was quoted as saying that the
Saturday night community' dance
would decline due 'to non support
from persons in the area who do not
farm full time. I would like to know
what the study was based on.
The conclusion that part timers
do not contribute to the communit-
ies does not fit the facts as I have
seen them, mainly over the past
three years in Kinloss Township.
Land that has not felt a plow for a
long time is being returned to
production. More dollars are
circulating among suppliers of
goods and services. As well, these
persons speak up for the farmer
when they return to work in the
urban areas. Lastly, and least
importantly, the "occasional resid-
ent" goes to the dances. If they
leave early, this comes from an
inability to keep up, not from lack
of interest:
My concern is that myths, such
as ,the one implied by the article,
tend to set up popular whipping
boys. Unless such myths are
challenged they may become the
basis of discriminatory government
policies aimed at the person who
farms part time/for the satisfaction
more than for the money. For
instance, the Farm Classification
Advisory Committee -has recom-
mended that people like me be
classified as "Rural Speculative":
I often think of that label when I am
out picking stones and digging post
holes".
Surely more important issues
have to be resolved to offer the
farmer a fairer share of the rewards
in our economy. When will we
have a sound land-use policy? How
about more effective competition
among suppliers of fertilizers,
equipment, and other farming
inputs?
Yours sincerely,
Greg Welch,
R.R. 3, 'Holyrood.
