The Lucknow Sentinel, 1975-05-28, Page 20The adults were, kept on the go
by a fevv problems such as a
break-hrin a room at the far end of
'the motel, -the Thompson station
wagon being stopped by a police•
car . and helicopter, as it fit the
description of .a hit and run vehicle
and a few ill band members.
Outweighing the minor difficulties
was the warm reception given the
band at each concert. Many of the
school pupils had never had an
opportunity to' hear a school band.
The band members and their
leader appreciate ,the strong sup-,
port of Lions Chishohn, McDon-
agh, Hamilton, Reavie and, Helm
and the. Lions, Club for having the'
band • as, their ,Parade entry. A
great deal 'of credit also goes to the
people of the community •who
attended the local concert and the'
Bruce County • Board of Education
for making this educational trip
possible.

ree Day Tur For Lucknow Concert
Band, Play Several School ConcertsAnd:
VON Convention Parade In Hamilton
Sixty-four members of the
Lucknow Concert. Band left early
• Thursday, May 22nd in a caravan
of one bus, two cars, and a station
wagon. The first concert of the day
was at East Oxford School near
Woodstock at ,9.30. Later in the
morning .a second' concert was
played at Burgessville Public
School: Mrs. Anne Pritchard
accompanied solos at the day's
Concerts. '
The band members ate their
lunches at the hoMe of bandmaster
Gordon Cayley's. mother in Nor-
wich. After treats arid a rest in the ,
shade, they assembled at Norwich
Public School for their third
concert. As well as pupils, many
, interested people, including Gord-
on's former public and high school
principals, and former band
friends, attended. "
The group then travelled to
Clappison Corners Motel where
they stayed and later to Burlington
Mall for supper and shopping. In
spite of their early rising and day's
hard work with the band, many
were still awake at midnight and
later. Mr. Cayley assumed by 2.30
a.m. that' all were asleep, and
retired himself.
Breakfast proved more of a
problem than planned as the motel
couldn't accommodate the group in
the time allowed,‘so grocerieS were
purchased and everyone was
served from the one kitchen-equip-
ped room. Courier seryjce
delivered toast and coffee from
room to room under the supervision
of cook Anne Pritchard*.
Friday morning, the band played
an outdoor concert at John A.
Lockhart School in Burlington and
in- the afternoon played outdoOrs
again at Brookdale School in
Oakville where Mr. Cayley taught
for seven years before coming to
Lucknow. The sun beat down while
pupils and some of the band-sat in
its full heat. After changing out of
hot uniforms, the band took a tour '
of Hamilton and had some time at
Eastgate Mall in Stoney Creek:
They stayed at the same motel 'the
second night, Friday.
Saturday dawned hot again and
because of .the heat, the girls were
allOwed to leave the vests of , their
uniforms behind as the band
organized tO"*ay in the Lions
Convention Parade in Hamilton.
They rode on the Lucknow Lions
Float which was decorated by the
band with a canopy of brown and
gold over the top. The material was
paid for by the Lions Club and Art'
Helm helped with building the
decoration frame. Several Lions
helped with Saturday's set up. The
two hour parade of over 170 entries
was very colourful.
The band had suppet 'at a
Highway 401 Service Centre and
returned home early in the.
evening. It was a hot three day
tour but one filled with fun and
fellowship for all band members.
Cecil Garniss was the On-the-job
bus driver and cars were driven ,by
Mrs. Rose Robb and MrS.. Laura
Lee Cayley. The station wagon--;
loaned by Don Thompson, was
„driven by Denver Dickie.
Two young men were especially
helpful throughout the tour. Dale
Lougheed and Murray Keith hand-
led numerous jobs such as packing,
counting members, breakfast and
room arrangements, checking
rooms and general supervision of
the group. Several band members
Lucknow
were on the job for setting up
chairs and stands at each stop. All
members co-operated fully and
were complimented many times on
their appearance and courteous
behaviour.
