Last- Saturday 'the Ripley Scouts
held their ,annual salvage drive.
With the price of waste paper at
two 'dollars a ton, and the
transportation cost to the recycle
plants in Toronto about seven
dollars perton, the Scouts collected
and disposed of it as a• community
service since there, was no ade-
quate storage available. However,
the bottles were ,redeemable.
Wing the work were ten Scouts,
Doug Peterbaugh, Bradley and
Larry Nixon, Kirk Nicholson,
Robbie Farrell, Charles• Dadson
(who lives over the former J. R.
White Store), Eoin MacKay, Ross
Stewart, Otto Linde, Jeff Stanley,
along' with their leader Donnie
Rudder. They had use of Lloyd
Wyld's panel truck for the drive.
The boys were treated to a
barbecue lunch of hot dogs and
cold drinks by Donnie on his front
lawn.
Last Thursday a four way stop
system for traffic was installed at
the Royal. Bank corner - the
intersection of the 15th and 8th in
Ripley. Two new stop signs were
installed on the fifteenth - one at
the corner: where once the 'Royal
Hotel stood - the second over by. the
Antique shop (Munn-McInnes
store) and also broad, white bands
were painted on the pavements
indicating the exact stopping
points. This four way stop business
is going to take a while to get
accustomed to doing. It seems
hard for some people to remember
and for others to see - so in the
meantime everyone should be extra
careful when approaching the bank
corner in Ripley. Also "warning"
signs were erected back 750 feet
from the' corner on each of the four
roads leading to the intersection.
The work was "completed last
Thursday afternoon by the Bruce
County Highway workmen - fore-
man Max Bushell of Lucknow,
Delbert Holley and Don Gillespie
of Kinlough, George Carter of
Holyrood and Tom Nicholson of
Belfast. 4
The village of Ripley has a new
village foreman taking over from
Ambrose Gamble who has been at
"The Point" for the past month.
He is Don Peterbaugh of Ripley.
Early last Saturday Don, assisted
by son Doug, placed the picnic
tables, garbage barrels and swing
seats back in Gore Park for use by
the public during the summer.
These had been stored 'in the
Huron Township shed (south
campus) or the old fall fair haft.
Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Cook of
Ripley attended the Ontario As-
sociation of Fire Chiefs 23rd
Annual Conference at the She,
Hotel in Niagara Falls
from Sunday to Wednesday of last
week.
When you are house cleaning,
look for pictures which would be of
interest to display in store wind-
ows. Gladys Arnold will look after
them.
Last Friday evening and
Saturday Mr. and 'Mrs. Bill Young
and daughter Trudy of Kitchener
visited 'with her parents Mr. and
Mrs. Murray Weber, Mike and Tim

The Ripley chopping mill "has
been closed for the past week and a
' half. It is—reported that the
property will be offered at an
auction sale there on Saturday,
May 24.
The sounding of . the fire siren
away through the night last Friday
was due to a car fire in the south
part of Ripley, while those on
Saturday were due to the accidental
cutting of the underground cable to
the fire phone at the home of
Johnny Dodds.

In one' of last week's papers,
writer Bill Smiley had an article
entitled "It's Metric Madness"
which was well written and timely.
In-it he---asked!Did..anyone ask you
if you wanted it?" and then
brought out the idea of the mouthy
minority pushing their ideas
over on the silent majority. We
understand that he is a secondary
school teacher and likely /as such
understands the metric syStem but
questions its need in the field of
everyday living in Canada.
