Randy Willick, Extension Assistant DAIRY REPORT The late spring rains and warm weather are now having their" ef- fect and the desired., lush green grass pastures are appearing. With the lush pasture will come the traditional surge of milk pro- duction, primarily from Indust- rial shippers. Since 'the beginning of the year, milk volumes have been showing a very marked in- crease over production in the same period of 1974. While production in the Prov- ince is up over 4% from a year earlier our production in the Bruce-Grey area is running away ahead of that of the Province. Bruce production is up close to 9% and that of Grey is up, 7%. ' This volume increase seems to' have a direct relationship to the numbers of milk producers in the Province. In the Province as a whole, there are still three pro- ducers going out of production for every new producer that .appears: In the Bruce-Grey area the total number of producers is On the increase, rather than declin- ing. The Milk Incentive Loan Pro- gram has been in existance for two years and has been well used by local producers. A good• per-. tentage, of the local increased production has come as 'a result of this program. Any producer who has not taken advantage of this program, is ad- vised to do so, if any enlarge. 'went or improvement in their dairy operation is under consider- ation. The program, is due to termin- , ate June' 30th for applications on proposed changes in 1975. It is highly unlikely that the program as' such, will be renewed at this time. Canada's dairy production still .falls below our domestic require-. .merits. To enceueage production up to these requirements, free M.S.Q. is still being made avail- able to producers this year by the Ontario Milk Marketing Board. Should drastic increase in pro- duction occur and or, consumption of dairy products decline srapidly, re-introduction of the M.S.Q. sys- tem would be expected in another year. • Producer information meetings in the Huron-Bruce-Grey region are just completed. The meetings were well attended, especially by can milk producers. Much of the information provided was in re- lation to the questionable 'future of can production in our area. Ontario, is now the only area in Canada where any milk is still shipped in cans, and it appears the high cost of handling milk in this form, may bring a termina- tion to this method in the coming years. Twenty-five percent of Ontario's producers are still us- ing;Tans, but produce about ten percent of the production., There is little doubt that economic ad- vantages would come to all phases of the Industry — consumer — processor — transporter and pro- ducer if the milk vokume could have one method of handling.
