At that instant, when the phone was away from his ear, a bolt of lightning appeared to pass through the phone and a ball of-fire, which Spence described as the size of a goose egg, shot out of the receiver of the phone about two feet, and then disintegrated. Spence returned to the phon asking Fred if he had noticed anything at that end, and ,when Fred replied in the negative, Spence ended the conversation and hung up, uncertain if the same thing, might happen again.
