TURNIP GROWERS
Recent research has shown that
turnips (rutabagas) have a high
requirement. for potash in certain
soil types: With the' increased
costs of fertilizer and the changes
in requirements, it is, well worth
the effort to have ,a • free soil
test.
Soil testing kits are available
froth this office.
WORMY CURRANTS
Some gardeners . are troubled
with Small worms' inside 'their
currants. These worms are the
maggots of currant fruit flies.
Two products are , recommended
as controls either methoxchlor or
malathion. Mix the product ac-
cording to label directions and
spray the currants as soon as the
bloom , is completed. Repeat the
spray 10 days later.
The above spray materials
should be available Wherever
garden products are sold.

Commercial sow men can' now
employ the free services of Live-
stock Branch Technicians to test
replacement gilts. iBiCkfat thick-
ness 'and age to market can easily
be reduced by 'using gilts which
are low in these traits as. replaee-
ment. , .
A commercial Downer Must have
at least a ten sow herd and the
gilts must ,be individually. identif-
ied (tattooed,;tagged or ear-notch-
ed). The owner must also have
suitable scales for weighing the
gilts and accurate records of
identification and birthdates.
It would only be reasonable to'
expect the owner to have enough
gilts to test,. to• make the Tech-
nician's trip werthwhile. For
