Bruce Farm Report DAIRY FEEDS — Good and Bad Sour silage is one of the most distasteful feeds for cows and they soon let you know it. Mouldy feeds or feeds with, excess amounts of certain minerals, will also , taste bad. What type of feed is fed to a beef animal to gain a pound per day •Ur a cow, •to pro- duce' 20 lbs. of milk is not very important. But to-day to get an animal to eat 40 - 50, lbs: of dry matter per day, it must be nice and there must be a variety of feeds. Laxative feeds are often fed when cows are in a somewhat constipated condition. These feeds are wheat bran, linseed meal, molasses, beet pulp, etc. All of 'the four above mentioned feeds are quite riseful in giving palatability and a laxative effect to feeds, but generally speaking not very ec- onomical to feed in'any sizeable quantity because of their high price and low overall total digest- ible nutrients. Most of them will give 'the animal's coat a "bloom" which one, might not get from other feeds. HOT AND COLD Hot feeds are those 'that have a high energy and of course, produce the most pounds of beef and milk. Cold feeds are rough- ages of medium quality, oats and other feeds of lower energy. An animal' of course, can be "burned out" but in most instances they have outlived their time by then. Many dairy farmers 'are feeding up to 30 lbs. of barley (hot feed) to dairy cows these days-and-get„ ting away with it. However, any change to high energy feeds should be made gradually and in this way the cows stomach be- comes used to them and there is therefore less stress incurred. Protein is again, a different topic. Rations can be formulated at this office. ' Contact the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, Box 1330, Walkerton. Telephone 881-3301. He has a liquid manure system with enough capacity to store the manure for 12 months. This man- ure is applied after the corn is planted and syrayed for weed control. This system has averaged 100 tons of 'corn per acre for sev- eral years without applying any commercial fertilizer for the past seven years. M. R.
