Winners Come From The Area During and after the 1974 moose and deer season the Ministry of Natural Resources collected deer and moose hides' from successful hunters. These hides are tanned 'and turned over to the native people of the province, who in turn make' jackets, gloves, etc. which are sold by them. In the .past,, some type of reward was given by the Ministry to the persons turning in deer or moose hides. In 1974 rather than, do this a province wide' draw was held in which persons turning in moose or- deer hideS were given a ticket on a draw for a hand made deerskin jacket, a pair of deerskin gloves, a pair of mukluks and a pair of slippers. By a strange coincidence, three of the four articles were won by people living in the Wingham, District, the coat by Carl Weber, Mildmay; Mukluks, Neil Walker, Zurich; and mitts by Gary Player, Stratford. County Highway Department Plans Employee Layoffs The Bruce County Highways Committee says that because of dramatically rising labor costs, the employees face either a general layoff or reduction in working hours. In the first 12 weeks of this year, labor costs Were $160,636, up 35 per cent from the same period in 1974. The jump followed a 15-per-cent increase in labbr rates combined with an increase in working hours. The county may have to lower its 'standards of service, said highways chairman Russell Stanley of Huron Township. Some 15 to 20 men could be affected. County engineer Eldon Yundt told county council last week that if layoffs are not made, workmen's hours may have to be cut. Mr. Yundt said that "corrective. action' is needed on spending or estimates• will prove inaccurate before the construction season starts. With last week's storm condi- tions, anticipated layoffs, did not come as all highway' employees were needed for snow removal and sanding duties.
