THAT
Ruth Alton and Sandra Hender-
son became members of Lucknow
United Church by profession of
faith at Sunday's communion'
service. Joining the church by
transfer of membership were Mr.
and Mrs. Bert Alton, Dr. and Mrs.
W. V. Johnston, Mr. and Mrs.
Andrew Ritchie, Mrs. Graydon
Ritchie and Janet Ritchie.
THAT ,
Icing conditions following Mon-
day's sleet storm brought down a
hydro line on Havelock Street
South and the residents of the
south-east part of the village were
without hydro for about an hour or
so on Monday afternoon. Children
were dismissed early from school.

A Sentinel error last week listed
the wrong sale date for Clete
Dalton of Ashfield. Correct date is .
Saturday, April 5.
Mrs., Bill Haldeliby of Kinloss
was elected president of the
Lucknow Skating Cub at annual
meeting held' at the Lucknow arena
on Monday. Other offiCeis are
Mrs. Leonard Stanley of Kinloss,
past' president; Mrs. Allan Rhody
of Kinloss; vice-president; Mrs. Bill
Farrish of Ashfield, secretary,
assisted by Mrs. Barry McDonagh
of LUcknow; Mrs. Bob Damsma of
Lucknow treasurer, assisted by
Mrs. Alan Barger of Ashfield; Mrs.
Elmo Sanderson of Lucknow,
badge `secretary, assisted by Mrs.
Alvin Hamilton of Lucknow; Mrs.
Bill Haldenby, test chairman; Mrs.
Don Thompson of Lucknow, press
reporter.
Eleven of the senior' members of
the Club will attend Test Day in
Harriston On March 26th.
The Skating Club executive plan
to attend a meeting at the
Harriston arena on April 7.
Olive Lapp, of Wingham, profes-
sional skater, who has been the
teacher for the past year will be the
1975-76 teacher for the Lucknow
Club. Skating nights next year will
be the same, Monday and Thurs-
day from 4.30 to 7.30.
Fun Night for both juniors and
seniors will be Monday, March 31
when, the members will be served
chocolate milk and donuts.
Money raising projects suggest-
ed for next year were bottle drive,
bake sale, • 50-50 draw, selling
chocolate bars., Final decision was
left to the executive.
Fees may be raised for next year.
The executive will set the fees at a
later date. The motion w#s
reviewed and discussed which
stated that registration money
would not be refunded unless, a
doctor's certificate was presented,
and then only a portion of the
money could be refunded due to
C.F.S.A. (Canadian Figure Skating
Association) regulations. 'The
portion refunded would be left to
the discretion of the executive.
Improvements fo,r next year were
suggested such as regular reports
in local paper of club activities,
tests- passed etc.; rules should be
posted and enforced; more of the
skaters, should attend coaches
clinic.
The treasurer's report showed a
successful year. The registration
'ees and proceeds from the 50-50
draw covered the expenses of the
year. The Achievement Night
receipts were $221.00-with a profit
of about $60.00 after expenses.
Peanuts May Be
New Crop
In Bruce County
An area farmer's experiments
may lead to a' new cash crop for
Bruce County. Ernest Beirnes
believes he scored with peanuts.
The few bugs left to be worked
out of the process are not
entomological ones, Mr, Beirnes
says. Because the crop' is new to
the area there seem to be no insect
problems yet.
Last fall, he sold his first
commercial quantities of peanuts
and Mr. Beirnes says there is a
ready market. The strain that
grows best here can be marketed
for eating, but is proving best for ,
peanut oil and peanut butter.
The Beirnes farm is on well-
drained, sandy soil about two miles
inland from Lake Huron • in the
Sauble Beach area. The soil type
and location are generally referred
to in Bruce as tobacco land.
' The peanut plants look like
clumps of red clover. _
Mr. BeirneS feels he is now
ready to go into peanut growing in
a big way. NiW types of seed will
make it possible to eventually
supply all of Canada's oil and
peanut butter needs locally, he
adds.
He recently abandoned his
long-time agricultural speciality - a
laying flock - and he loses' no
opportunity to suggest to other
farmers they try the peanut way
too.
He carries a bag of home grown,
unshelled nuts around in his ,
pocket, offering a taste and a sales
pitch as he goes.
