LA'. BASKETBALL,
On Saturday, March 2 the Ripley
unior Girls' Basketball team
avelled to Walkerton to play in
e Bruce Interscholastic Associa-
on Basketball Tournament.
Members of the team are Laurie,

uber, Donna Gallant, Jane' Mes-
nger, Alice Steininger, Helen
eet, Mary Jane Courtney and

In the first gaMe they came up
ainst Wiarton. They won this
me by a 53-31 score. In the final
me Ripley won over Saugeen
condary School 56 to 32.
They certainly were a bunch ,of
ppy girls on Saturday afternoon
hen they won the B.I.A. champ-
nship. The top scorer of the day
r Ripley was Laurie Coiling. The

W.O.S.S.A. CHAMPS!
The Ripley Junior Girls'
sketbali team travelled to St.
avid's School in Waterloo to
nipete in 'the Central Western
Ontario Secondary School Associa-
tion Championship Games. In the
first game. they came up againSt the
horne team of St. David's. They
put up a good fight. and came out on
top 41-38'. After a 2. hour rest they
played their second and final game
against Erin Secondary School.
After 4 quarters of regulation time
the' store was 42-42. This
necessitated a 3 minute overtime.
Scoring the overtime baskets to
bring the Ripley team's score to 46
were Laurie Coiling and Janice
Farrell. Erin also scored a basket
and got 1. point' for a, foul shOt. So
after three minutes of plaY the
score ended up 46-45 in favour of
Ripley.
In recognition of their winning
the title of C. W.O.S .S.A. champs
they received a plaque which will
remain in the school for a year.
. The coach of this year's team
who has put a lot of effort into
training the girls and doesn't get
much credit is Mr. • Coultes.
Congratulations once again girls!
CHEERLEADERS
The Cheerleaders have gone to 'a
lot of work this year to learn a lot 'of
new cheers and they have really
been getting good. They should'
also be recognized. They are
Donna Hutber, Debbie Zipfel,
Mary Ann Coiling, Sharryl Mason,
Adrienne Quinn, Marilyn Stewart
and Marilyn Rhody. 'Yeah Girls!
BANK MANAGER SPEAKS
TO STUDENTS
On February 25th, at the request
of Mr. R. Burnett, Consumer
Education and Eccmomics teacher
at R.D.S., Mr. Mickey Fletcher,
manager of the Royal Bank in
Kincardine, spoke to the students
at Ripley District School.
At 9.15 a.m. Mr. Fletcher spoke
to the Consumer Education stud-
ents. He discussed Branch-Bank-
ing in, Canada, and compared it to
Unit Banking in the United States.
He later explained' the services
offered by his bank and finally he
answered a number of questicins
from the students.
After a short break, Mr. Fletcher
again spoke to the Economics class
about the types of credit available
at the Royal Bank, the. Balance
Sheet and many other aspects of
banking.
Ashfield Native
Died At Age 84
DAVID M. COWAN .
David Mervin Cowan, age 84,
. passed away at Greensboro, North
Carolina on Thursday, March 6th;
He 'was born in the Kintail
district, arson of Mr. and Mrs. John
Cowan Sr. 'In 1910 he went west to
British Columbia. ."
Mr. Cowan was a veteran of the
1st World War, serving, in the
air-force. He worked with Sun Life
Insurance for 30 years. Since 1923
he has been a resident of the
United - States.
Besies his wife 'at Greensboro,
Mr. Cowan is survived by a
daughter Mrs. Ralph (Pamela)
Stickle of St. Albans, West Virginia
and a son David of Chicago.
Burial was • at Toledo, Ohio on
March 9th.

Was WI Speaker
Lucknow Women's Institute held
their regular meeting featuring
Public Relations in the Town Hall
on Tuesday afternoon, March 11th.
with a good attendance. Mrs.
Donalda Scott played piano num-
bers during dessert, and a cup .of
tea, after which Mrs., A. J. Wilson,
the president, opened the meeting
with the Institnte Ode and Mary
Stewart Collect. The correspond-
ence was read by the' secretary
"Mrs. Grace. Campbell and the
business dealt with. Delegates
were appointed to the officers
conference in Toronto on April
30th, May 1st and 2nd.
Mrs. Philip Stewart gave a report
on the organiiing of the next 4-H
club which will be a garden club.
There will be a workshop on
nutrition in Ripley on April 10th. It
was decided to hold the annual
meeting on Monday, April 7th
(insteadNof Tuesday) at 12.30 with a
pot luck dinner. Mrs. Earl
McDonald gave the cheerio report.
The roll call was 'answered by
telling of something we read in the
press about another institute.
Mrs. Marshall Gibson Was
Convener 'of the public relations
program and opened with a poem,
"Siie Of Heart". Mrs, Wes Ritchie
played for a sing song. Mrs. N. J.
MacKenzie very capably gave the
motto "Living a life is more than
making a living". She Spoke of
many great men and women, who
had dedicated their lives to
research not thinking of material
gains and how their lives had been ,
a benefit for all mankind, examples
being Drs. Best and Banting, •whO
discovered insulin , and, many
others. It is through dedicated
people like these that new -discov-
eries are made.
We enjoyed music by Mrs. Lorne
Durnin from WhitecIturch, 'who
played several selections on the
violin accompanied by Mrs. Garnet
Farrier on piano.
We were very pleased to have',
Mrs. Victor Emerson from White-
church, who gave a good talk in
her pleasant and humorous manner
on public relations in the institute
and the duties of the P.R.O. at
different levels of the organization.
Mrs. Mary Miller thanked Mrs.
Emerson and presented her with a
small gift.
The institute 'ladies Mrs. Ruth
Helm, Mrs. Earl MacDonald, Mrs.
Howard Barger and . Mrs. 'Stewart
MacGillivray sang two Irish songs
accompanied by Mrs. Wes Ritchie
which was enjoyed. Mrs. Miller
gave a reading "The Ragged
Jacket" and the meeting cloSed
with the Queen.
