Randy Mick, Extension Assistant DAIRY PRODUCTION ON THE INCREASE Production of dairy products has shown a fairly steady in ,since the summer Of '74, in the Province of Ontario. The exit of dairy farmers out of the Industry has shown a marked decline as well. In spite of high feed costs it appears that ,farmers are' maintaining more heifers on the farm, that in other years might have gone to market. 'In the Bruce-Grey areas, there con- tinues to be new producers com- ing into the Industry and the re- quests for assistance in milkhouse planning has been brisk. One third of the dairy farmers in Bruce have taken advantage of the milk Incentive program to this date. This program is sched- uled to run out at the end of June. Farmers still considering changes in their dairy operation are en- couraged to formulate their plans and -apply' under the- IMPIP prior to the spring rush. The formula used to determine the price received for milk ship- IN MEMORIAM CULBERT — in loving memory of our beloved daughter, sister and aunt, Arlene Heather, who was taken, suddenly from us March 30, 1970. Although the resource inventor- ies have been completed and engineering studies initiated, the next major step in completing the plan is to request public comment and ideas for management of the 6,000 acre area northeast of Clinton. A 28 page brief on the area is, available from the Ministry' office.- ped under Group 1 quota, calls ,for, an increase of $1.16. - cwt. April, 1st. This price increase will bring income back closer to costs, and serve to strengthen the value of Group 1 quotas which are' in very short supply at this time. • It is anticipated at this time, that information meetings will be held throughout the County early in April, where current dairy topics, the Graduated Entry Pro- gram and the '75 - '76 , Federal Dairy policy can be discussed. Brucellosis continues to be a County problem , and all farmers are advised to have any purchas- ed animals blood tested prior to introducing them to their herd, R. D. Ferguson, Area Fieldman, Milk Industry Branch ATRAZINE RESISTANT LAMBSQUARTERS • Last year, in Bruce County we ran into a problem we had 'never seen before. On a farm near Rip- ley a type 'of lambsquarters has developed that can't be controlled by Atrazine, Normally 2 lbs. of Atrazine will control lambs- quarters. But in this case 4 lbs. of Atrazine with oil applied, post- emergence had little' affect on the lambsquarters. Experiments run at Guelph, have confirmed that Triazine herbicides such as Atra- zine and Blaclex give no control of this type of lambsquarters. It seems that this weed has devel- oped resistance to Triazine herb- icides. In these same experiments, . Guelph found that 2 lbs. Lasso plus one pound Atrazine applied pre-emergence gave good control of this type of Iambs rters post emergence of 'theS same chemicals gave no control. It's possible there could be some escapes, in which case a post. emergence application of 2,4D will clean up the escapes. Unless using drop nozzles the 2,4D Must be applied than 6 inches high (leaf ex- tended). before the corn is more I doubt very much whether there is a great deal of this re- sistant lambsquarters in the County. But if last year you not lambsquarters was not. being controlled by Atrazine, then you zine combination applied pre-eni- eshr;etilindceboe using nly. the Lasso-Atra- If you think you have a prob- lem in this regard please contact me at the Walkerton Office — Box 1330 or TeleAm880301.
