Road costs eat up
budgets in Bruce
Forty-nine per cent , of
Municipal expenditures in
Bruce County last year, went on,
road 'construction, 'main-
tenance and iipprovement. Out
of.the $7.7 million. spent by' the
31 local municipalities, , $3.8
million was spent on roads.
'Bruce County itself spent a
further $1.65 million on roads,
well over half the. county
budget.
A report to county council
notes that the Ontario ministry
of transportation and com-
munications provided
$2,976,448 in grants to county
and county municipalities in
the 1973-74 fiscal year.
Roads make up more than 60
per cent of the township
budgets, but less than 30 per
cent for towns'and villages.
The county is responsible for
306 miles of road, 224 miles of
them paved.
The county, townships and'
towns each maintains its own
roads department. Five of, the
nine villages .also do but' .the
other four villages contract all
road services.
Among towns, Port Elgin has
by far the largest road system
to maintain with 40 miles of
streets. Southampton has 25
miles, Walkerton 23, Kin-
cardine 22, Wiarton 12.5 and
Chesley 9.3 mileg.
Paisley has the most ex-
tensive street system among,
village's with., 15.3 miles.
Lucknow has 9.4, Teesvvater 7,
Mildmay 5, Lion's Head 4.9,
Tara and Tiverton four each,
Hepworth 3.5 and Ripley 1.8
miles.
Bruce Township leads all
rural municipalities in road
mileage with 150.2. Brant 'has
135, Huron 128, Amabel 110 and
Carrick 105. Lindsay Township
has the lowest rniteage at 48
miles. '

The February meeting of Dun-
gannon Women's Institute .had
"World Affairs" for its theme.
Mrs. A. W. Stewart was hostess for
an attendance of 14 members and
one visitor. 'The president,. Mts.
Graham McNee, and secretary-
treasurer, Mrs. Harry Girvin, • conducted The meeting.
The Opening Ode and Mary
Stewart Collect were used followed
by an impressive "In Memoriam"
for a long-time member of Dun-
gannon W.I. Her musical contribu-
tions in particular will long be
remembered.
The roll call, "A way. to teach
children how to be good citizens"
had a variety of responses. Some
of these were: respect for all ages
and all colours; obedience to rules;
sharing; dikipline; be a -good
example;. .welcome newcomers;
encourage organized sport.
Correspoadence included (1) a
letter from Mrs. Maluske of
Chesley, the new provincial presid-
ent, which encouraged member's to
participate in any of the 'three
International competitions.

An interesting program • on
World • Affairs followed the busi-
ness period. Mrs. John Clements
gaVe the motto - "The World is My
Country; Mankind is my Friend".
This was well-prepared and well
given leaving us many worthwhile
thoughts.
The topic on "Prejudice and
Disciimination" was given in panel
form by Mrs. Clarence MCClenag-
han and Mrs. R. Robson who
pointed out clearly the several
definitions of prejudice and dang-
ers of making hasty judgments.
Courtesies were expressed. col-
lection and pennies for friendship
received, followed by singing the
Queen . and Institute Grace,
Hostesses for, a dainty lunch
were Mrs. Hugh McWhinney, Miss
In-Carr and Miss Beth McConnell.
