Nothing like the ladies high jump
in a -track and field meet to attract
attention. Pictured on the front of
last Saturday's Toronto Pally Star's
sport section was East Germany's
Mrs. Rosemaire Ackerman clearing
the bar at 6 feet 3 inches in the 13th
annual indoor games at the Maple
Leaf Gardens. It brings back
memories of the 1935 field meet
between the Lucknow and Ripley
High Schools when Helen Collins of
Purple Grove, now Mrs. Jerome
Schmidt of Mildmay, cleared the
bar something over five feet. As it
was a rainy afternoon in October,
the event was held in the shelter of
the old. wooden Lucknow rink and
everyone gathered around in a big
circle to watch the girl from Ripley
make a record fors this area of
Western Ontario.
BARN DESTROYED
IN THURSDAY FIRE
About a half hour before noon
last Thursday morning, in the,
middle of a snow storm, the
ominous wailing of the fire alarm
sounded in Ripley. In a few
minutes both 'the fire and tanker
trucks were munding the Royal
Bank cornet towards Pine River
and into the snow, blown by
northwest winds. The barn at the
farm of Arehie Stewart on the
Bluevater Highway near Kincard-
ine was on fire. The location is just
before the railway crossing on the
.east side of the road - the former
Sam Farrell place. It is reported
that a passing rnotbrist noted the
fire and went into the house to alert
'the family. The barn, along with its
contents and forty pigs, Were
destroyed. The firemen kept the
blaze from n nearby shed and
outside machinery. It will be
recalled that school buses did not
run on Thursday; ploWs had been
"pulled off" the roads and from
Stratford north conditions were
extremely bad. A car carrying
firemen to the blaze had a near
miss at Ray Walden's corner at the
intersection of the tenth and 21
highway. On the new fire truck
were Chief Ivan Cook and Bob
Johnston and driving the, pumper
truck were Doug Liddle and
Clarence Pollock. George McLean
had his car with Oraen Rock, and
John Dodds was the other Ripley
fireman to make it through the zero
visibility storm.
