LET'S BAKE BREAD
The Training Schools for 4-H
Leaders for the Homemaking
Club project "Let's Bake Bread"
is just over and it looks like num-
bers will be up a bit for this pro-
ject — about 600 girls, have ex-
pressed an interest in taking this
unit.
During the Club, memberS'
families will be served various
kinds of bread ranging from
basic white bread to rolls to
fancy breads such as. Swedish
Tea Ring and Chelsea buns. Also,
no-knead batter breads are made.
We're sure the families of our
members -will take a "special"
interest in this Club.
Achievement Days will be held
in April and May, so keep 'an eye
and an ear open fore specific dates
and places if you would like to at-
tend and see exactly what the 4-H
members have learned.

CORN ROOTWORM
Last year Northern Corn Root-
worm adults were found through-
out the southern part of Bruce
County. The adult is a light green
beetle about 1/4 inch long and is
found in late August or .early
September feeding on corn silks:'
Where there are a large number
feeding, the silks have a brushcut-
like appearance.
Other than clipping off silks, the
adults don't do much damage —
it is the larvae or worms. The
larvae eat ' the small roots and.
tunnel through the larger ones.
As a result, a plant which has
been damaged lacks vigour be-
cause it is not able to take up
water or nutrients. In addition
the weakened plants may fall
over. In an attempt to straighten,
the Plants bend or "goose-neck"
which makes harvesting quite
hard.
I mentioned previously that
thereh were a large number . of
adults around last year. High
adult populations are poor indic-
ators that you have a problem.
The only reliable method is to dig
up plants in mid-July and look
for the worms: If you have a pop-
ulation of more than 10 root-
worms - plant, then you should
treat next year. At present I.
doubt whether anyone should be
treating for Rootworm in Bruce
County. 'To get set up for treat-
ment will cost you about 1125 -
planter row, plus the cost of an in-
secticide. Next year 'a survey will
be run and we will have a much
better idea of the situation.
