LUCKN9W SENTINEL, • r • N r.. :"( PAGE TWO Friends were saddened on Mon- day, January 27th to learn of the sudden passing of . Mrs. Gerald (Violet) Rathwell. She was 63. Her death was attributed to an aortic aneurysm. Mrs. Rathwell was the former Violet May Pagan, daughter of Ralph A. I. Pagan 'and Norah Harfield. She was born at , Brampton on February 14th, 1911. Following her marriage to Thorny as Gerald Rathwell on October 6, 1941, they resided in Lucknow where Jerry, as he was popularly known; was a shoe' merchant. He passed away on May 10th, 1968. For the past five years until the time of her death, Mrs. Rathwell has' been •librarian at the Lucknow Public Library. . She is survived by two daughters and two sons Mrs. Evans (Barbara) Helm of, Lucknow, Beverly of Toronto, Torn of Durham. England, Terry of Lucknow , and three grandchildren. Besides her husband .she was predeceased by her parents, a sister Barbara Joan Pagan and two sisters in infancy. Mrs. Rathwell was a member of Lucknow Anglican Church and was affiliated. with Lucknow United Church- and the , United 'Church Women.. The funeral service was held at 'St. Peter's Anglican Church, Luck- now on Thursday, January 30th• with Rev,, George Garratt and 'Rev. Doug Kaufman as ministers. MacKeniie Memorial, Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Temporary entombment was at South Kinloss ' Mausoleum with final resting place. Greenhill Cem- etery. Miss June Harris, 20 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Harris of Kinloss Township, was instantly killed , in a highway accident, at Clandeboye. She was enroute home to spend the week end at her parental home on concession 10. The accident occurred in a blinding snowstorm. The Lucknow Fire Company's annual Burp's. Night Ball was long associated with stormy weather, and the January 1955 dance revived the old superstition. .About 10 O'clock that evening King Winter struck' in •earnest and within three hours dumped a foot of snow on the diStrict. Visibility was reduced to •nil and motorists were either stranded or were driving 40 YEARS AGO JANUARY 1935 . Treleaven's mill pond was the terminal for Henry Mather's driv- er,. which ,put a sudden stop to its short runaway dash. Mr. Mathers 'and his son Pharis were starting for home when the. horse Aecaine unruly and as its spirited• dash got underway, was turned *in at Tre- leaven's mill' by Pharis who was driving. The dash ended with the steed being catapulted into the race at the rear of the mill. The. cutter Cwas badly damaged and although. Mr. Mathers was thrown - out. neither occupants were injured. At the annual meeting of the Dungannon Agricultural Society the following officers were elected, • President, Jas. Hedley. • The Grand- Trunk Railway Sys-4 tem was advertising winter tours to 94th Birthday Observed Recerqly Mrs. Charlotte Weatherhead of Lucknow observed her 94th birth: day on Monday, January 6th. She was formerly of West Wawanosh Township but has been ,a resident of Lucknow for a number •of years. Murray Gaunt M.P.P., on behalf of the ,Government of Ontario, presented Mrs. Weatherhead with a commemorative plaque.' She also' received greetings from Prime Minister P.E. Trudeau. Lady Directors Review Fair Work Mrs. Win. Arnold was hostess to 11' members of the. Lady Directors Committees of Ripley Agricultural 'Society on January 30th. The convener, Mrs: Howard Thcimpson was in charge Of the meeting and expressed her thanks to all for their fine co-rOperation during the year. She reviewed some of the work of the committee: 1 She had met with the Needlework, 'Arts and. Crafts and Flower Conithittee to revise the prize lists for 1975, The secretary, Mrs. Wm. Arnold had met with the Domestic Directors. These lists had been prepared before the holiday season and mailed immed- iately afterwards, Judges' fees were increased to $15 at a Workshop for Judges held in Owen , Sound last fall. Mrs. Oliver Mc first -day of Fair will be appreciated. Mrs. Jim Brooks and •Mrs. Stewart Brooks have agreed to again help with noon meal on first day of Fair. The Purple 'Grove Women's Insti- tute' and Junior Farmers will be in charge of the Booths. It was decided to add a Coverall apron to the Needlework classes and more yeast classes in the Junior Section. During a lunch break served by Mrs. Howard ThomPson,, members discussed many small ways in which the work of the Fair could be improved. Mrs, Wm. Arnold has a granite pie plate and Melmac plate left at last year's fair. • • THE t-LICKNOW SENTINEL, Charles is head of a committee preparing a display for the conven- tion. in Toronto on February 19 and 20. Ten names have been received to attend the convention. Anyone may go and spend two days' in Toronto by contacting Mrs. Wm. Arnold. The financial report of Ripley Agricultural SoCiety was reviewed.
