"-* AMBERLEY — A 'study of public access,
to beaches along Lake Huron in Buren
Township may have to be scuttled for lack
of funds.
Dan Mansell, district manager at the
Wingham office of the Ontario ministry of
natural resources, said Monday his office is
hoping to conduct the study but a shortage
of provincial funds may cancel the projeet.
The 'study of access, to the southern Brute
County township's 10 miles of shoreline
stretching from Amberley to Kincardine
"has been on the, books for several years,"
he _said. •
Mr. Mansell said, however, his office
planned the Study for this summer bid he is
pessimistic about the availability of the $3,-
.00046,000 required for the project.
The ministry proposal comes when Huron
Township officials are becoming increasingly
concerned that private development of cot-
. tages by outsiders along the shoreline may
be preventing local residents from enjoying
the lake.
Huron Township Reeve Russell Stanley
' said his council has considered purchasing a
three-acre parcel of 'land north 'of Mint
Clark for public use. ‘.
Township council believes the choice -lake
frontage would make an ideal spot ''for a
small park, he said.
But the price tag on the property means
the township will be forced to seek provin-
' cial assistance if it seriously wants to ac-
quire the' land.
Meanwhile, Mr. Mansell said the ministry
considers there is already sufficient park-
land in the Wingham district — along the
lake froin Grand.,V3 nd, to the northern bor-
der of Huron Townshio.
An extensive shoreline study was con!.
ducted in Huron County four years ago, he
said. The only ,remaining portion of the
shoreline to be studied is in Huron Town-.
shin.
If approved, the Huron Township • study
would consider the amount of public access
available to Crown-owned beach and If there
is adequate fishing, floating and parking, fa-
cilities for use by the general public, Mr.
Mansell said,
The township shoreline includes several
extensively developed private cottage areas
at Bruce Beach, Lurgan Beach, Poplar
Beach and Boiler Beach, he noted.
The study could also consider locating pic-
nic tables and public privies near beach
areas.
Mr. Mansell said he hopes to know within,
a month if the request for funds to conduct
the study will be approved.
Reeve Stanley said the township would.
"welcome the study" although it doesn't 'at
present ;contemplate contributing funds to-
ward it.
