THE LUCKNOW SENTINEL, LUCKNOW. ONTARIO WEDNESDAY JANUARY 22 1975
N.F.U. NEWS
By Mrs. 6:Austin
In a report by the London Free,
Press on! JanuarY 16 of Farmer's
Week 'in Ridgetown, Mr. Broadwell
of the 9ntatio Bean Producers
Marketing Board reported on- the
great challenge of selling Ontario's
bean, crop this year - "the, situation
is complicated by Ethiopian beans
on the world market at lower pricei
and More beans from Romania and
Ethiopian beans were in' the
news in November when an article
in, an Australian newspaper report-
e,d that H. J. Heinz Co. in Australia
had imported 'beans from Ethiopia,
even though starvation was ramp-
ant in that country. •
National. Farmers Union Presid-
ent, Roy Atkinson referred to this
- irony as an example of the mrner
in which multinational corporations
exercise economic control over
developing countries, at the N.F.U.,
Convention in • December.
The comments received nation-
wide news eoverage and provoked
a letter from Mr. A. Forsyth,
president of H. J. Heinz Co. of
Canada Ltd. which stated as
follows:
"During the recent N.F.U. con-"
vention in Winnipeg you• were
reported to hae made reference to
the H. J. Heinz, Cs., shipping
beans from Ethiopia to Australia at'
a time when residents of Ethiopia
and many other emerging nations,
are facing starvation. .
First' of all, Ethiopia has been
producing Haricot Beans ('a variety
with limited use in North. America)
for over twelve years; and accord-
ing to their government statistics,
this is their nation's biggest foreign•
exchange earner. Failure to export
their bean crop would mean loss of
work for thousands of. people.
To have withheld beans from the
export market and divert them to
famine relief would be of less value
to Ethiopia.. Their Government
does not have the money to pay
farmers • who depend' 'on export
sales for cash. Instead, Ethiopians
are able , to use their export
earnings to import low-cost food
more acceptable to the Country.'
As far. ,as Heinz-Australia are
concerned they were faced with a
very poor crop and were forced to
find alternate sources' 'of supply.
This also applied' to CamPbell Soup
COMpany and other canners.
We in Heinz Canada have long
valued our strong relationship with
Canadian farMers and rely almost
entirely on their products for our
Canadian operations.
As a good corporate citizen of
Canada we share the concern ,of all
Canadians about human starvation
throughout the world. Only last
month we sent froin Canada a
plane load• of baby food to.
Bangladesh through a non-govern-
ment relief agency. We will be
continuing in this program in the
months ahead, and we do this
without publicity of any kind, as we
would never want to seek gain from
the misfortune of others.
If, 'in ;the future, you have any
questions concerning Heinz in
Canada or around the world, we
would be pleased to talk with you
and perhaps avoid the kind 'of
inaccurate publicity of this past
weeks"
In this letter Mr. Forsyth 'of
Heinz Canada seems to be saying
"Let them eat dollars". How much
money do Ethiopian farmers get
from the export of their beans
anyway? If you were a starving
Canadian farmer, would you count
on Heinz Co.?
