Church basement: Lois Noble opened with a meditation and Doris Htiffmin led in • prayer. An amusing skit followed, entitled "Fall In the Family". Characters were Mike — Marlene Struthers, Archie - Lois Noble, and minister - -Doris- Huffman, Lois 'Noble led .--a discussion in connection with the skit. Many interesting points were brought out. 'Linda Cranston gave the treasurer's report. .The.business part of the meeting opened with correspondence being read fiorn Dominion Life choir. It was _decided to use the calendar year for the year end. Suggestions were brought up for activities for the new year. These included •a trip to ,LOndon to the Univeristy to S , WEDNESDAY.' Mrs. Harold Cooper was in charge' of the devotional period. The motto used the letters J.O.Y. If we .piltt, things in_ proper perspect- J fqr•Jesus Christ; Ofor others and the Y for yourself, you will find true joy becoming a part of your life. — The business was conducted by Mrs. Cliff Roulston, vice president. The programmes for the coming year, prepared by Mrs. Tom .Pritchard, were discussed . and approved. Due to catering prob- lems it 'was decided to change the meeting to the second Tuesday of the month on a permanent basis. Discussion re choir gowns followed and Mrs. •Les Hazelden was, appointed to purchase material.. Turkey pies are to be made Wednesday,, January 22. WS. Mrs. •Jack Scott was hostess for the January 'meeting of the Angli- can Church Women on Thursday afternoon. The ladies came early and a quilt was. quilted cluringthe afternoon. The vice president, Mrs. Howard . Thompson; was in charge of the meeting and welcomed everyone. The opening hymn was 'Father let me dedicate all this year to Thee". The Epiphany scripture lesson was read .by Mrs. Gerald Rhody. Rev. George Garratt had a special prayer for our prayer partners Rev. and Mrs.' George Honour who served in this parish a number of years ago. The member's prayer and the Lord's, prayer were repeat- ed in unison. Everyone answered the roll all with the word "light" which as the theme of the first meeti g in the New' Year. s. Howard Thompson gave a ly Nevi, Year's meditation and ad an arable on "Your church ernbership''. Mrs. Jack Scott ye a reading "The light of the odd" from the Living Message. ' he vestry meeting was announced for January '27th. Mrs. Bert Nicholson acted as secretary for the meeting. Rev. Garratt dosed the meeting wih the litany from the Living Message, prayer and grace. Mrs. George Graham gave the Courtesy remarks and delicious refreshments were ,served by the hostess. The February meeting will be the Lenten quiet day and will be held at the home of Edna and May. Boyle. Conveners will be Mrs. David Haldenby and Mrs. Midford Wall. dedicated by Graham Kay. Grace was sung after which all enjoyed lunch. THIS WEEK IN RIPLEY BY AB wyt.,ps The annual meeting of the Ripley Agricultural Society' was held in the Ripley District High School on Monday evening,, January-13. It is. remarkable that, a number of people •made the trip into' the village on such a snowy wintry night -, the first of 1 a week of inclement weather. In turn three different men presided at the meeting - each taking. a different section. They were Hugh Mason, Lester Ferguson and Morley Scott. Incidentally, twenty members were present, namely Mrs. Wm. J. (Gladys) Arnold,' Ab Wylds, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver' McCharles, Mr. and Mrs, Duncan D. MacLeod, Reg Moore, • Lester Ferguson, Hugh Mason, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Farrell, Mr. and Mrs. Dan A. MacDonald, Mr. and Mrs. Morley Scott, Mr. and Mrs. Russ Brooks, John Gamble, Gordon Patterson and Jim Needham. • A numberof report's were given concerning the work of the society in 1974: .Treasurer Mrs. DOrothy Brooks presented the financial statement and read auditor Don McLay's report. Some plans and, motions were made for the coming year. The work of holding a fall fair never ends. Ripley "Show Day" will again be the last Friday and Saturday • in September with the "friendly fair lin the country and the home coming week , end" scheduled for September 26 and 27. Also the date of the- annual spring dance was set for Friday evening, April 18 with the Dimen- sions orchestra in the Ripley High School Auditorium. Hugh Mason had 'made these arrangements. Hugh is now past, president after .two quite successful years as president. In his retiring address he thanked all directors, 'exhibitors and supporters for their contribu- tion and help during these past two years. Lester Ferguson, who has been the immediate past . president, volunteered to help the society as an associate director. Morley Scott of the Purple Grove area of Huron Township was elected the new president- Jack Farrell is the first vice president and Dan A. Mac- Donald was elected second vice president. Treasurer Mrs. Dorothy Brooks and secretaries Fran and Ab Wylds complete the executive of the society. Two new directors were appointed to 'the board - Duncan D. ,MacLeod of Ripley and Cecil Sutton of concession 10 east in Huron Tovviship. Mrs. Marjorie (Howard),„ Thompson of Purple Grove and. Mrs., Gladys (Wm.) Arnold of Ripley are the' chairman and secretary, respectively of the lady directors. Prior to the meeting Mrs. Arnold ' and Mrs. Jim Brooks prepared lunch and at the end of the meeting Mrs. Sheila MacDonald, Mrs, Dorothy Brooks and Reg Moore assisted Gladys in serving the lunch. The next monthly meeting watch ,a performance by the Drama Club and a trip to Stratford Shakespearian Festival. It was agreed to obtain a book of worships and readings to keep in the group with Marlene Struthers to kink after the same. Ideas were brought up as to what the money in Our group should—be used for. -The most favour4sUggestion was one to purchase ' an article of play- ground equipment for installation, possibly by the swimming pool. The next meeting will be held February II. Lunch was served by Lois Noble and, Doris Huffman. is set for Meonday .evening, Febru. ary '10. " During the past week Western Ontario has experienced steady winter weather with, snow falling every day in .. the area here described as'the "lee of the lake". On Thursday •the .,snow flurries were so heavy at times that the visibility for cars and trucks on the roads was zero. Huron TownshiP road Superintendent Dave Moore reported •that it took him three quarters of an hour to, get to his home from Ripley. Just at noon hour, driving her car with Zero visibility' at times, Mrs. Mary Rudder, coming by Pine River took 55 minutes to come from Kincard- ine to Ripley. Later in the afternoon there were a couple of clear spells. Miss • Noreen Mac- Donald struck one of these in coming to Ripley from Kiocardine hospital as also did Alex Macintosh in travelling home to • Lucknow from the Ripley Chopping Mill. School' bus drivers took, the students home earlier in the afternoon as principal Bill' Turvill and Floyd Stanley dismissed clas'ses. Winter weather is unpredictable so that ' often the forecasts do not turn out as stated. The value of planting evergreen trees for winter shelterbelts could be seen this past week. Cottam, Ont'rrio, passed away last Thursday in his 77th year. A Chester Russell Finlayson of former native of Huron Township, he is survived by two brothers Warner of. Orlando, Florida and Orville of the fourth concession in. Huron Township.. ,Also locally three nieces, daughters of Mr. end Mrs.. Orville Finlayson, Virene, Mrs. Alvin Thompson of Kincard- ine Township; Oral, Mrs. Murray Cameron • of Toronto and Marilyn, Mrs. Bob Johnston of Ripley. Doug is now home using crutches while Morris expects to be home soon. Both have been patients in the University Hospital in north London. Peoples' Society held their meeting Sunday evening in Chalmers Church Sunday school room. Miss Hilda de Boer was in 'charge of the Worship service. -The meeting opened with hymn sing- ing.
