BENDER SENTENCED
Wm, Bender, formerly of Zurich,
was on Friday at Clinton found guilty
of bringing liquor illegally into the 0,
T. A. County of Huron, and was sent•
entad by Police Magistrate Andrews
to a four menthe' term in the county
jail as a penalty for violating the act
for the third time,
The charge upon which he was
found guilty was set to be tried on
February 8, but was adjourned to the
15th, and since that time it hae been
adjourned from week to week until
Friday, which was the tenth adjourn
went.
In the meantime Bender sold bis
house and lot in Zurich and is now
said to be in Detroit city, at any rate
he was not present on Friday.
The evidence of three clerks of
Scandrett Bros., wholesale liquor deal-
ers of London, was taken Friday, and
the sale of $125 worth of liquor to
Bonder was proven.
The case has created a great deal of
nterest in the county as it is the first
time an offender has been committed
to a jail term as an offence against the
0. T. A.
Grown Attorney Seager of Goderich
has acted throughout the case for In-
spector Torrance of South Huron,

Miss Louie Wilburn has gone to Tor-
onto, where she has secured a position as
stenographer.
Mr. and Mrs. Wm, Sellers have re-
turned after spending the winter with
relatives at Detroit.
Pte. Leslie McKinney and Harold Kar-
ney went to Wingham to commence
drilling this week.
Pte. Harold Holnes was home for over
Sunday.
Quite a number from here went to
Wingham Tuesday to see the soldiers.
Mrs. and Dr. T M. King left on Tues-
day for their home at Sao, after spend-
ing the past few weeks with relatives
here.

It is officially announced, through
the chief prose ceneor'e office, that the
steamship Olympic, which. eailed from
Canada on April 5, has arrived safely
in England. She had on hoard the
following troops: The 59.h Battalion,
30 officers and 1,073 men; 01st Battalion,
37 officers and 1,091 men; 07th Battal-
ion, 34 officers and 1,045 men; 71st Bat-
talion, 35 officers and 983 men; No. 4
t Siege Battery, 0 officers and 212 men;
Ontario Military Hospital, 27 officers
and 81 nurses; ammunition column,
llth Howitzer Brigade, 3 officers and
108 men. Drafts: Horse Artillery 2
officers and 150 men; Mounted Rifles'
4 officers and 200 men; R. C. IL, 1 offi-
cer and 180 men; University contin-
gent for Princess Patriciae, 5 officers
and 250 men; medical, 10 officers, 27
nurses and 164 men.
Miscellaneous: Veterinarians, 21 offi-
cers; advance party Lumbermen's
Battalion, 2 officers and 15 men; de-
tails, 2 officers, 1 nurse and 4 men,
Grand total, 5,785.
The 71st Battalion was recruited in
Western Ontario under Col, Donald
Sutherland, of Princetown, Ont., who
had seen previous service with the let
Battalion of the first contingent.
About a dozen young men from
Wingham were in the 71st Battalion

The police bug seems to run in the
Ferguson blood, as William Fergu•
son, eldest son of Walkerton's chief
weIlder of the baton, has beenappoint
ed a constable at Syracuse, N.Y., and
is'now one of the big noises on the
Yankee force. The Americans who
are too proud to fight, will find that
William isn't if they try to fix things

Mr. Ferguson was a resident of
Wingham before the family moved to
Walkerton.
Enlisted in the West
Mr. Will Groves of Sumeserset,
Man., writing to relatives in town
says that they have had five months
straight sleighing in that part of
Manitoba, Mr. Groves is a brother of
Robt. and Thee, Groves of Lower
WIngham, and has been a drover and
grain buyer in Summerset for about
20 years. He has enlisted in the 148rh
battalion and will train at Winnipeg.
This battalion secured 1200 recruits in
a little over two weeks.
Good Concert at Teeswater
The drama, "East Lynne," was act-
ed in the. Town Hall on Friday night,
under the auspices of the Anglican O.
W. A., by the looal young people and
was a decided success. The amateurs
were greeted with an overflowing
house and unstinted and well deserved
praise was given to the young actors.
Some of the scenes made a profound
impression upon the audience as the
drama moved from the amusing to the
pathetic. The following is the cast of

Shortly afterwards he was appointed
postmaster at Brussels and continued
in this position until advancing in-

then he has been living with his son,
Martin. in Collingwood, where he
passed away on Sunday.
Mr. Farrow was thrice married.
He is survived by a family of four
sone and two daughters, -John M.,
London; R. R. Farrow, Ottawa; Mar-
tin, Oollingwood; Ward, Windsor;
Mrs. Brownlee, Montreal, and Mrs
O'Connor, Thorold.

ance advocate, an efficient worker in
the Sabbath School, and an excellent
local preacher, doing much effective
work in the early days. In religion be
was a Methodist and in politics a
Liberal Conservative.
The funeral took place from the
Methodist Church. Bluevale, to Blue -
vale cemetery, on Wednesday after-
noon.

the effects of his critical operation at
Wingham Hospital.

Our enterprising hardware merchant
Duncan McCollum, was married in
Woodstock last Wednesday to Miss Ger-
tie Sproat of that city. They arrived
home on Tuesday night. Congratulations
are in order.
Pte. Richard Fay of Wingham Detach-
ment, is engaged with R. McKenzie for
two weeks in seeding.
The anniversary services at Sunshine
last Sunday were a great success and
were well attended. Rev. Mr. Wren of
Brussels was the minister. His sermons
were of a high order; filled with depth
and spirit which gave the congregation a
new conception of man's dignity. This
was a treat which only at intervals comes
to the way of rural community annivers-
aries. On account of the bad weather
on Monday night the entertainment
which was to have been put on in con-
nection with the anniversary was post-
poned.
George Jordan has been a victim of
mumps the past week,
Bert Faskin, son of our genial Grand
Trunk agent and a graduate of Toronto
University, was visiting his parents here
last week, prior to his departure for over-
seas, being attached to a Toronto detach-
ment.
Robert Armstrong has returned herc
after.a month's sojourn at Seaforth and
eastern Roints.
A big night will be given on Thursday
night of this week, when, through the ef-
forts of the War Auxiliary, the 18 boys
who have put on the khaki in this com-
munity will each be presented -with wrist
watches. A good program is on the
way. All that have contributed to the
gifts are welcome.
Miss Minnie Campbell has taken a po-
sition in A. Taylor's store for the sum-
mer.
. Miss Budge has returned to her home
in the village after spending the winter
with her nephew, Rev. Austin Budge, of
Hamilton.
Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Proctor spent
Sunday in Wingham.
Mrs: Lemon of Hamilton is spending a
few days with Miss Budge.
James Nicholson, df 4th Line, lost a
fine horse last week.
Little Clifford Stewart is on the sick
hat.
Mr. A, Taylor has a new McLaughlin
car and Rev. H. E. Parnaby a new Ford,
Quite a severe electrical storm passed
over on Sunday eve. John McCallum's
house was struck and chimney shattered,
John Armstrong has bought Rev. H.
B. Parnaby's horse.
Dr. Kirkby has bought ano' her driver
and is now driving a sporty little team.
Doc. evidently loves tfie horse rather
than the auto.
Harvey Watson has been taking charge
of Dune, McCailum'e hardware while he
is away.
