A Young Perspective Many Christmas memories bring a smile By Sarah Mann I thought for this month’s teen page I would write about my favourite Christmas memory. I thought about it and realized that I couldn’t think of one, but I could recall many memories that made me smile. I remember once, when I was younger, I received a phone call from Santa Claus. Imagine how cool I felt and how jealous my friends were when I told them that. What I couldn’t remember was why I got the phone call so I asked my mom. She informed me that it was because both my mom and my Watching others open gifts one of Christmas 's best feelings By Elyse DeBruyn Christmas is my favourite holiday because the best feeling is seeing my mom, my dad, or one of my brothers open a present I have given them. On Christmas Eve, when we spend it at home, my family and I have a finger food supper while watching Christmas Vacation. Sometimes my mom’s brother and his family come from Toronto to our home for the big turkey dinner with stuffing, cranberries, mashed pota toes, vegetables, pickle trays, and of dad were going to be working on Christmas so Santa was going to drop by one day earlier for me. My family and I went for a walk around town to look at all the Christmas lights displayed and when we arrived back Santa had already visited. Another time I remember was when my Grandpa Mann took my sister, some friends and I for a drive to look at all the Christmas lights. We didn’t have our seat belts on because we wanted to get a look at all the lights. Out of nowhere my grandfather told us very sternly to sit down and not say anything. We had been course the gravy. Over the years I have had so many wonderful Christmases. I remember not wanting to fall asleep, hoping to hear him, or catch a glimpse of Santa. Every Christmas Eve we would leave cookies and a big glass of milk for Jolly Old St. Nick and a crisp car rot for Rudolph. Santa would always leave the glass on its side when he was done. We would also leave the fireplace doors open for him, but he would forget to close them. pulled over by the cops! The policeman was very polite and just told my grandpa to make sure that we were sitting down and buck led up. We did so, my grandpa not being one to argue with. Another time my family got storm stayed at my grandparents house on Christmas Eve. It was horrible out side and I remember thinking how it was pretty crazy that Santa Claus knew I was going to be there instead of at home. Again, my mother informed me that my father had braved the winter storm to drive to my house and get my gifts so I could open them Christmas morning. After all these memories I think the best one I have is when my broth er was born. On Dec. 22. 1984 Kevin John DeBruyn was born into this world. I was only two years old at the time, but I still remember going to see my mom in the hospital. As I ran into the room I saw a clear bassinet. I looked inside and said to my mom “I like him.” So after years of receiving presents of Barbie dolls, Cabbage Patch Kids, and all the other things, the best pres ent was my baby brother Kevin. After thinking about these memo ries, I realized what parents will go through to make Christmas special for their children. Goderich 524-BOWL Youth picks no favourites as each Christmas is special By Ashley Gropp I was asked to write about my favourite Christmas, and I was left with a blank. No particular one stands out in my mind, so instead, I've chosen to write about the mem ories that have made each Christmas special. In tne family as a small child, I was notorious for sleeping in, espe cially on Christmas Day. Rumour has it that one year, my little brother was jumping on me and my older siblings were yelling and pinching me to try io wake me. It was no use, and I woke up about half an hour later to here them all sigh, "Finally!" in near-perfect unison. For me, shopping has always made the season for me. I really enjoy picking out the perfect gifts for those I love. Last year, for exam ple, I was insanely giddy for Christmas morning because of the gift underneath the tree for my little brother. It was a t-shirt of a band he loved that I could not find in any store. Then there was the year I was 13. I'd spent the summer working my first real job (babysitting for $2 an hour) and I knew exactly what I wanted to get my mom-a gift set of Sung, her favourite perfume. The cost didn't matter and the look of surprise on her face was more than worth it to me. I also plead guilty to enjoying the receiving end.of the gifts. I can't help sitting in front of the tree days before Christmas with the same excited curiousity I felt as a child. The odd time the gift is obvious ("HMV gift box just the right size for a CD"), but even then, my curiousity gets the better of me ("Which CD is it?"). There are also traditions which I have grown to love, and although they are repeated year after year, I never tire of them. When I am final ly dragged out of my bed, we descend the stairs for the family photo. After that comes the stockings (and the good natured arguments over who goes first), followed by a breakfast of cinnamon buns, clemen tines, and coffee cake. Then, one of us hands out the presents one by one, dragging out that ritual for hours, without it taking too long. Our per-' sonal musical tastes are put aside and we listen to all the new CDs. Perhaps the best part of it all is that despite having two teenagers in the house since my earliest memories, and very extreme personalities, we all manage to listen to each other and get along effortlessly.
