OCWA will address water quality eomplaints been made worse by increased chlori nation, Rouw said, because chlorine is an oxidizing agent. Rouw promised there would be regular flushing of the water lines to try to get the rust out. There might even be swabbing — use of foam rubber pads that are forced through the watermains to clean out the rust. John Stewart, clerk-treasurer, said there had actually been mo^g com plaints about the chlorine than*from rust, but there is little that can be done about that because the village must meet new provincial standars. Rouw agreed that because there are minimum chlorination standards for water at the farthest point from the pumphouse, the level for those near est the pumphouse would be high. ‘ There are steps people can take for better tasting water, however, he said. Because chlorine has a low boiling point, it will quickly dissipate when heated, he said. The water can then be cooled and be used for drinking Continued complaints about the quality of Blyth’s water will be acted on, Henry Rouw of the Ontario Clean Water Agency promised council at its last-ever meeting Monday night. Rouw, whose agency now oversees both sewage and water in the village, said there are regular complaints both about rust in the water and about the strong taste of chlorine. The rust problem, caused in part by the strong iron content in the water from the village’s deep wells, has Lawrie warns estimate may be low water. Even putting water out in an open container to sit overnight will see most of the chlorine taste disap pear, Rouw said. The inconvenience was worth the safety factor, said Councillor Jeff Howson. “People want safe water. The only way we can do it is chlori nation. If people want to do some thing like that (getting rid of the taste) it’s up to them.” Meanwhile, on Rouw’s suggestion, Blyth council will recommend to the new North Huron council that up to $3,000 be spent on a new electronic system for the reservoir, to monitor the amount of water in the reservoir and automatically call someone if the level gets too high or low. Council, also on Rouw’s recom mendation, approved payment of $50,384.95, less a 10 per cent hold back for incomplete work, to DeJong and Sons Ltd. for the construction of a new sludge holding tank at the sewage treatment plant. Continued from page 3 support. That’s why the original idea of council was to provide a third of the total cost of renovations, or $265,000. The rest would come from public fundraising and provincial grants. But Lawrie warned that the current $800,000 estimate for renovations may not be realistic. “Don’t get the dressing rooms half built and run out of money,” he warned. And, he said, a larger facility will also cost more to maintain. Council passed a motion that any money left over from the Blyth Hydro sale go to the arena if necessary. Other projects getting money will be: Blyth’s 125th anniversary celebra tion, $5,000; Blyth Greenway project, $5,000; Billy Thuell Memorial proj ect, $3,500; $6,700 each to Gypsy Lane construction, the arena, Memorial Hall, and the Blyth Festival. Because the sale won’t come into effect until the new year, it will actu ally be up to the North Huron council to disperse the money but the current council has recommended where the money go.
