Walton UCW celebrates Christmas
FROM WALTON
Wednesday, Dec. 12 was the
UCW’s. Christmas supper/meeting.
The ladies enjoyed some very tasty
casseroles and the dinner ended with
some delicious and rich desserts.
With Marie McGavin at the piano
the ladies sang some favourite car
ols, then Oiene Dennis, Edith Wey,
Doreen Hackwell and Marjory
Humphries began the worship part of
the meeting with readings.
One was about the origin of the
Twelve Days of Christmas. The gifts
listed in the song were actually
meant as a coded memory exercise
during a time in England (1588-
1829) when Catholics were prohibit
ed from practising their faith.
The song’s gifts represent teach
ings of the faith. The ‘true love’
refers to God, the partridge in a pear
tree is Jesus Christ, the pear tree
symbolizes the cross, two turtle
doves - represent Old and New
Testament, three french hens - repre
sent hope, faith and charity, four call
ing birds stand for the four gospels,
five gold rings stand for the first five
books of the old testament, six geese
a laying, eggs are a universal symbol
of new life. Seven swans a swim
ming are the seven gifts of the spirit
and eight maids a milking stand for
the eight beatitudes in Matthew 5.
Nine ladies dancing represent the
fruits of the spirit and 10 Lord$ a
leaping are the 10 commandments.
Eleven pipers piping are the faithful
apostles and 12 drummers drumming
represent the 12 points of the doc-
trine in the Apostles’ Creed.
A Christmas quiz was handed out
by- Doreen. Oiene read a cute little
poem called, A child’s view of
Christmas in a mobile home. It was a
nice evening enjoyed by all.
Wilbees greet
Gloria and Keith Wilbee and sons
greeted worshippers at Duff’s United
Church on Dec. 17. Kathy Huether
and Matthew read the Advent
Liturgy and lit the pink candle. The
choir sang the Advent song, She
Walked in the Summer.
Joan Tuchlinksy called the young
people forward and showed them the
little blue teddy bear she was hold
ing. It had belonged to her grano-
mother. Sometimes things like that
can be comforting to older people
who are alone. She said that some
times when people need someone to
talk to, they turn to God and talk to
him.
Gloria Wilbee and Graeme Craig
sang Beautiful Star of Bethlehem.
Joan announced that Thursday,
Dec. 21 is the Longest Night Service
at the church starting at 7 p.m.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Next
Sunday is the Christmas Eve morn
ing service in which there will be
special music and communion will
be served. Christmas Eve service,
Sunday night, will be at Bluevale
starting at 7:30 p.m.

Huron East
hires S. Oliver
At the Huron East transition board
meeting, Monday night, a motion
passed to hire Sherry Oliver on a six-
month contract basis.
Oliver will fill a vacancy left when
current Brussels Clerk-Treasurer
Donna White accepted a position
with North Huron.
The consensus of the board was
that hiring Oliver, who has just com
pleted a temporary contract with the
Brussels municipal office, will main
tain a contact person for the village
in the new municipality.
Also, according to Grey represen
tative Alvin McLellan, the board
addressed concerns that had been
presented in a letter from employee
Hugh Nichol, by Brussels rep Joe
Seili. McLellan said it is felt the
decisions will be satisfactory to
Nichol.
His just desserts
Mrs. Claus was a little distressed that she never gets to
accompany Santa on Christmas Eve so she and her
helpers decided on a strategy - they would hide his cookies.
Sarah Gerber, a Brussels Grade 1 student found the perfect
spot to keep them from Santa. The class was participating
in the annual Christmas concert held Wednesday night.
