(Vicky Bremnerphoto) Brussels PeeWees Lightning Bantam Girls double-header action beat Blyth, Zurich It was a big victory for Brussels PeeWees when they faced-off against neighbour­ ing rivals at home on Dec. 15. While keeping Blyth off the board until the second period, the hosts lit the light three times in the first to lake an early solid lead. Adam McCluie scored two, while Andrew McDonald tallied one. Brent Wheeler assists on both of McClure’s goals, with a helper from Doug Schnock on the second, while assits on the McDonald goal were creditted to Greg Bowers and Steven Ropp. Phil Wedow, off a play by Matt McClinchey put the hosts up 4-0 early in the sec­ ond, but less than a minute later Blyth got one past the Brussels netminder to cancel it. With just five minutes left in the period, Wheeler bulged the twine, assisted by Mitch Blake, then scored another with seconds remaining. Matt White and Wedow set up the play. Brussels continued to domi­ nate in the third, with Wedow scoring two early-period goals for a hattrick. White, Justine Mayne and McClinchey with two earned the assists. Blyth popped one in less than a minute later. Then with just over three minutes remaining, McClure got Tiis hattrick goal assisted by Wheeler and Tyler Jutzi. This ended the scoring and sealed the 9-2 win. It was a closer contest on Dec. 17 when Brussels trav­ elled to Zurich. After a score­ less first period, White, with an assist from Bowers got the visitors on the board in the second. With almost five min­ utes remaining in the period, Wedow put Brussels up by two with a helper from Tate Stephenson. Then with sec­ onds remaining before the buzzer Wedow scored his sec­ ond. Wheeler earned the assist. Things got tense in a penal­ ty-riddled third period as Brussels managed only one more, while Zurich popped in three. The hosts had pulled to within one just minutes into the period but McClinchey gave them back the two-point spread, assisted by Wheeler. This proved to be much needed insurance as, with 35 seconds left on the clock, Zurich got within one once again. Brussels held on for the 4-3 win. Highlanders lose 5-4 The Grey Bruce Chapman Ice Cream Major Atom Highlanders had a rough time getting started this past Saturday when they played Brampton. They lost 5-4 and were losing 4-0 until 9:16 of the third period. Starting the scoring for the Highlanders was Jeff Colton from Jim Hutchinson and Todd Hellyer. Other scorers were Adam Corbett, unassisted; Derek Widmeyer from Conor Gill and Rhys Thomas from Jay Tremble and Mitchell Ferguson. In net for Grey Bruce was Sean Van Berdan. On Sunday, Dec. 17, the Saugeen-Maitland Lightning Bantam Girls handed Hamilton their first loss in league play this season. In the first period, both teams sparred back and forth, feeling each other out to end the period scoreless. The Lightning went on a five-minute powerplay early in the second period and was rewarded when Heather Walker rattled one in off the post from a pass by Katie Whytock. Just as the penalty ended, Brittany Roberts, on a breaking pass from Walker, walked in all alone to give the team a two-goal lead. Hamilton was still reeling from the onslaught when Krista Cameron, assisted by PeeWees battle Wingham On Sunday. Dec. 17, Blyth travelled to Wingham with a depleted squad. The Bulldogs were impressive through the first five minutes of the game holding their own against the hard-hitting Wingham squad. For example, temporary licences are only being issued to those who are successfully screened against Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) databases. And, like current licence holders, those with temporary firearms licences will be continuously screened against police databases. Firearms licences will be issued only to those found eligible after further screening. These public safety checks conform to the Firearms Act and keep firearms away from those who should not have them. Temporary licences will be issued to eligible firearm owners who applied in the fall. Temporary licence holders are not permitted to acquire firearms. However, they will be in legal possession of their firearms and they will be able to purchase ammunition as of January 1, 2001. Temporary licences are only valid until June 30, 2001 or until those eligible receive their 5-year licence. Roberts from Walker opened the third period with a shot that found the open cor­ ner to give Saugeen a com­ fortable lead. Hamilton staged a comeback after they snuck one past Terri Allen with five minutes remaining and came within two after a tic-tac-toe play ended up in the back of the Maitland net. Roberts completed the hattrick to end the Hamilton charge on passes from Kellington and Cameron for the 5-2 victory. Allen made several outstanding saves stopping 19 shots of 21. In game two, Hamilton was on a mission and came out Hy­ ing. The Hamilton squad Bulldogs, scoring five unan­ swered goals and taking a good lead into the second period. The Bulldogs played great throughout the second period allowing just one goal and tallying the equalizer with 6:47 to go on a nice shot by opened the scoring early after banking the puck off the back of Allen’s pad and it looked like Saugeen knocked the wind out of their sails when Cameron tied the game 10 sec­ onds later on a nifty centering pass from Walker. The Maitland wheels then proceed­ ed to fall off and when the smoke cleared and the period ended, Saugeen was trailing 5- 1. A scoreless second period and one each in the third left Saugeen with 6-2 defeat and their first loss in league play. Lightning’s third period goal was scored by Kellington from Cameron. The Lightning Bantams try their hand at the Mississauga tournament after Christmas. Justin Dobie assisted by Darren Austin. Jeffrey Elliott had an out­ standing game in the Bulldog cage facing a very large num­ ber of Wingham shots. The game ended 9-1 in Wingham’s favour.
