The big winner will be plans to expand Blyth and District Community Centre. “I really feel strongly about the arena,” said Councillor Robbie Lawrie in argu ing for an even chunk of the money than the $265,000 already designat ed for arena improvements. When the boundaries of the village are wiped out, he said, the arena will be one of the keys to keeping the com munity spirit intact. Come into the village any evening and look where the cars are, he said. “They’re at the arena.” Reeve Mason Bailey had suggest ed council might be wise to set aside money for future needs of the vil lage’s infrastructure. “I hope I’m wrong, but I think water could be a big expense within a short time,” Bailey said. But Lawrie, the biggest proponent of giving more to the arena, said that the new North Huron council will look after things like water and streets but things like the arena might suffer. “With this new arena we can stand with anyone”, Lawrie said. Arenas that fall behind will no longer be viable, he predicted. He pointed to the situation in Zurich where the community may lose its arena. Councillor Doug Scrimgeour agreed, saying not all arenas will be able to survive. Bailey agreed there should be strong support for the arena, but he also said the public must show its Continued on page 40 Aerobics Where? Blyth When? Naturally Christmas was the theme that the meal was based on, so turkey with all the trimmings was served and enjoyed by everyone. Adrian Vos delivered five take-out orders while 50 people attended the meal. This month we saw new faces in the kitchen as Nelva and Spence Scott as well as Neil Schade of Brussels were busy helping Millie Hoggarth who was cooking up a storm. Attending from Seaforth Manor were Everett Scrimgeour and Tom Joyce, chauffeured by Charlene Foxton. F.rma Cook was the winner of the 50/50 draw while Leo Dyk was the recipient of the door prize. Leah then read the history of how the candy cane. A candy maker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would represent the birth, ministry and death of Jesus Christ. He began with a pure, white, hard candy; white to symbolize the virgin birth and sin less nature of Jesus, and made it hard to symbolize the solid rock. He made the candy in the form of a “J” to represent the name of Jesus. It could also represent the staff of the “Good Shepherd”. Thinking that the candy was some what plain, the candy maker stained it with red stripes. He used three small stripes to represent the scourg- THE BLYTH MUNICIPAL OFFICE Will be closed December 25, 26, 27 and 28, 2000. Normal office hours December 29, 2000. Next month is co-ordinator Leah’s final time for the meals. Her husband has taken on a new job opportunity in British Columbia. Dianne Weber will be taking over. We will miss Leah and we wish her the best. Birthdays for the month of December are being celebrated by Kathy Bromley, Jean Plaetzer, Marian Haggitt, John Hesselwood, Kay Lapp and Neil Schade. After the business was dealt with, Harold and Dorothy Steffler of Brussels were accompanied by Harvey McDowell on the violin. This got people into the Christmas spirit “musically”. The next meal being held by the Town and Country Support Services will be Jan. 5. The program intended is for Heather Barrow the hospital dietician as guest speaker.
