FROM BRUSSELS At the Branch By Jo-Ann McDonald It seems as though the year 2000 has just begun and here we are ready to start the year 2001. Branch 218, Brussels has strived to meet the goals of serving its members and the community. Of course, efforts to support the Legion and to contribute to groups and organizations in the community keep members busy with many fundraising activities. This past Sunday a wonderful brunch was hosted by the Branch. Only a small crowd attended but was well pleased with the wonderful array of food. They certainly appre ciated the efforts put forth by the dedicated members of the Branch. Awonderful potluck was attended by a good crowd on Friday evening. A gift exchange followed and many a good laughs were shared by all. It will be quiet around the Branch until New Year’s Eve. Admission that night is $5 per person and there is potluck lunch later in the evening. Music is by D.J. Tickets are avail able at the Branch. We will start the New Year’s activities on Jan. 1 with a New Year’s Day Levee. This is a chance for people to drop in to the Branch and enjoy a reception that welcomes the New Year with all good wishes for a prosperous year ahead. Everyone is welcome to attend. We are still hoping that everyone can get in to pay their 2001 dues by 2001. As I’m writing this, the snow is swirling and depending on your view it’s a winter wonderland of sparkling sculptures, or it’s a pile of awful stuff. I like the stuff. It also gives Hugh and Don one last chance to do what they do so well, The Snow Extraction Ballet. We’ll need you two for consultants (yes, you make big bucks) when we open the school for Huron County Snow Ballet. Applications are out for ah the new municipalities so they can learn how to remove snow, not just move it. Thanks fellas - good work. The students at the public school performed to a full house, plus lots were standing, last Wednesday. Good job. Saturday night a the arena was a “Has Been” party. Former clerks, reeves, staff, councillors and com missioners gathered to celebrate Brussels. We remembered the high lights of our terms, the low spots of the years, the grand controversy of that season. Politics doesn’t change much. ■* Henry Exel who initiated the evening was host as memories were shared, good employees were cele brated and hopes were expressed that Huron East will meet and surpass our expected standards for our municipality. We’re in the countdown days to Christmas. Tradition is part of that and our community offers several. The Community Carol Sing is Thursday at 7 p.m. at the United Church. Come and sing Frosty and all your other favourites to set the mood. The Optimist Wagon ride is on Saturday starting at 7 p.m. at the gazebo. Come ride with the lights, the music and the jolly drivers. Then Sunday night come to the church of your choice as we all do the same thing, remember history, celebrate the birth that changed the world. Enjoy the joys of this week and share it as new traditions become old. Share the spirit. Have a blessed Christmas. Betty G. W.
