Sports Lightning wins final in shoot-out On Saturday, Dec. 9 the Saugeen- Maitland Lightning Bantam “AA” girls came up on the short end of the stick with a loss and a tie (0-l, 0-0) after outplaying Sarnia and Burlington in the Stouffville tourna ment. Saugeen out-shot the competi tion 15-7 and 21-2 but just couldn’t get it past the netminders. The Lightning found themselves facing the undefeated Ottawa Raiders early Sunday morning and not only had to win, but needed Burlington to beat Sarnia who were playing on the other ice pad in the building at the same time for Saugeen to have a chance to finish second and make it to the final game. The teams came out skating hard and both goaltenders were tested early in the first period. At the 4:14 mark, Jackie Zacher intercepted a pass, fed the puck to Heather Walker and Krista Cameron put the rebound up high to open the scoring. The trio struck 12 seconds later when Walker put it past the goalie from Cameron and Zacher as they swarmed the Ottawa net. The Raiders scored late in the sec ond period to set the tempo up a notch going into the final period. Terri Allen was sharp and kept Ottawa at bay while forwards Crystal Ferguson, Jocelyn Carter and Kate Whytock buzzed the neutral zone breaking up the Raider plays. Saugeen-Maitland went on the power play late in the period and put the game away when Brittany Roberts put a Zacher rebound high over tlv goalie to win 3-1 and the hockey gods spoke as Burlington downed Sarnia to open the gate for the Lightning to go on to the final against Ottawa. The first period was an instant replay of the previous game but this time the Lightning were down two after Ottawa put goals in at the 4:40 and 4:20 marks. Saugeen roared back and Zacher put Cameron’s rebound in to bring the girls within one a minute later. The Lightning opened the second on a power-play and made the most of a faceoff in Ottawa’s zone as Walker won the draw back to Cameron who one-timed it through the five hole from the top of the cir cle and tied the game at two. The defence consisting of Jessica Mann, Bridget Sheddon, Candice Robertson and Amanda Hill were solid in tying up the forwards and picking up loose rebounds in front of our net along with great saves by Allen to keep Ottawa score- less. A hard-fought third period proved fruitless for either team sending them into five minutes of sudden death overtime. No scoring in over time set up the shoot-out format. Three players from each team would take a penalty style shot alter nately and if the score was still tied then they would continue through the team in a sudden death format until the tie is broken. It wasn’t until after six great saves by Terri Allen (one of them by the post) that Brittany Kellington beat the goalie on her glove side high in the corner to clear the Saugeen bench for a well-earned victory. Saugeen meets the undefeated Hamilton this Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. in Howick Community Centre.
