Jean Ross receives humanitarian award A woman with Brussels ties was the recipient of this year’s Humanitarian Award for Seaforth’s Citizenship Awards. Jean Ross, daughter of the late Clarke and Hazel Matheson, who resided in the home which is now the Brussels Mennonite Fellowship Hall, said she grew up in a home where parents were involved in the commu nity. Some of Ross’s contributions to her community, where she moved from Sarnia 12 years ago, include numer ous roles at her church, canvassing for the cancer society, chairing the seniors committee at the local Legion branch and packing lunch boxes daily at the 1999 IPM. In an interview with The Huron Expositor Ross was humble about the recongition. “People say I’m so busy and maybe I am to their standards. Somtimes I have to be selfish and stay home and do the lawn and housework. But, getting involved isn’t very hard. It doesn't have to be anything big. Just walk up to some one and say, ‘Hi.’ It isn’t a job if you feel like doing it.” A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Coll 887-6236 887-9231 Ah, the songs of the season. Music is in the air as the season of Advent unfolds setting the mood for con certs, pageants, gatherings and pre sentations. I hope you’ve attended the great offerings in our community and know when the next ones are coming. The public school concert tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 p.m. is the next one to lift your spirit. Speaking of lifting spirits, take time this week to talk to a Grade 8 student to find out what their class has been doing. Mrs. Binnoto-Peal is teaching the importance of good deeds; of living in community, and kindness. Instead of knocking the kids this week celebrate their good deeds. The Brussels Business Group is busy printing tickets. Each week new ones are made for the weekly basket draw. Santa Claus got an extra Ho Ho on Dec. 2 when he made it possi ble for Deb Cloakey, Emiline Johnston, Beryl Smith and Chris Terpstra to take home a goody bas ket. Winning shoppers at the Dec. 9 draw were Barb Albert, Donna Marks, Marie McIntosh and Don Ruttan. Keep the Christmas spirit and sup port our local businesses. The giving of Christmas brings out the best in people so enjoy the sea son, the parties, the festivities and the mood, as the joy of the season envelopes each of us. Bye now, Betty G. W.
