A CHESTER EARL Chester Earl, beloved husband of Ruth (McDonald) Earl of Atwood, passed away at Listowel Memorial Hospital on Monday, Nov. 27, 2000 in his 78th year. Besides his wife Ruth, Chester is survived by three sons: Dennis and Joan of Sault Ste. Marie, Gary and Beth of RR2, Listowel, Rick of Guelph, and one daughter, Judy of London. He was a dear grandfather to seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Mr. Earl was the loved brother of Arnold and Helen of Ottawa, Bertha Searson of Ayr, Rita Dunbar of Listowel, Laura and Walter Douglas of Sebringville, and brother-in-law of Rev. Stan McDonald of London. Chester was predeceased by his parents, Les and Eva Earl, a daugh­ ter-in-law Mary Earl and three brothers-in-law. Visitation was held at the Peebles Funeral Home, 141 John St., Atwood, on Wednesday, Nov. 29 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was from the Atwood Presbyterian Church on Thursday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. Interment was at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel. Donations to Heart and Stroke or to the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Ethel, would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy by the fam­ ily. Rev. John Neilson officiated at the service. Pallbearers were Jeff and Susan Earl, Craig and Janice Kane, Becky Earl and Chris Beuermann. Flowerbearers were Sandy, Cathy, Lori-Ann, and Sherri Earl. DAVID VERNER DOWNEY Mr. Verner Downey of Wingham and formerly of Bolton passed away at Wingham and District Hospital on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000. He was 85. Mr. Downey was the beloved hus­ band of the former Helen Lowden and father of Donna and Robert Wattam of Belgrave and Loma and Gordon Priddle of RR1, Badjeros. He is also survived by grandchildren Tammy and Glenn Davidson, Jamie Priddle, Justin Priddle, Michael and Cora Wattam and great-grandchil­ dren Amber and Trever Koehler, Andrew Wattam, Lindsay, Zachary and Logan Davidson. Mr. Downey was predeceased by his parents Wilton and Gertrude (Verner) Downey, his son David Downey in 1965, his granddaughter Michelle Wattam in 1985, four sisters and one brother. Visitation was at McBurney Funeral Home, Wingham, Ontario on Saturday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. Funeral service was held at the funeral home on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Nancy Corrigan officiated. Intermept will be in Wingham Cemetery, Tumberry Twp. Memorial donations to Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated as expressions of sym­ pathy. JOHN JOSEPH SOONTIENS John Joseph Soontiens passed away at his residence in Seaforth on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000 in his 57th year. John Soontiens was the beloved husband of Pamela (Goodwin) Soontiens and dear father of Brian and his wife Kim of London, Kathy and her husband Steve Blake of Brussels and David of Waterloo. He was the loved grandfather of Justan and Cassandra Soontiens and Johnathan and Johanna Blake. He is also survived by his father Rene Soontiens of Stratford, three broth­ ers Joe and Gerrard of Mitchell and Frank of Chatham, one sister Marianne and her husband Dennis Mikel of Fullarton Twp., and his mother-in-law Doreen Goodwin of Seaforth. Mr. Soontiens was predeceased by his mother Johanna (Kiessens) Soontiens. The family received friends at the Whitney-Ribey Funeral Home, 87 Goderich St. West Seaforth on Monday, Dec. 4 from 7 - 9 p.m. The funeral service was held there on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Maitlandbank Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Lung Association. NORMA JEANETTE DAER Miss Norma Jeanette Daer of Blyth passed away in Clinton on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2000 in her 79th year. She was the beloved daughter of the late Herman and Minnie (Reinke) Daer and dear sister of Louis Daer of Blyth. Miss Daer was for many years a retail clerk in Blyth. Norma was a member of Carry On Cloggers until the past couple of years. A great supporter of Blyth’s Communities in Bloom program, the avid gardener was known for her beautiful Howers and hardy vegeta­ bles. She was a volunteer at the cemetery tending flowerbeds and pruning shrubs. At Norma’s request there will be no funeral home visitation. A private family service was held at the Blyth Visitation Centre on Tuesday, Dec. 5. Rev. Ernest Dow officiated. Interment will be in Blyth Union Cemetery. Donations to the Blyth Union Cemetery Board, Huron Branch of the Ontario Humane Society or to the Christian Science Trust in Canada as expressions of sympathy. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Beattie-Falconer Funeral Home, Clinton. Prizes went to high lady, Laura Johnston; second high lady, Mary McIntosh; most shoots, Helen Stonehouse; low lady, Alice Nicholson; high man, Ken Spears; second high man, Jim Coultes; most shoots, Norm Turnbull; low man, George Michie. Seven tables of euchre were in play at the Women’s Institute Hall. Winners were: high lady, Jean Pattison; second high, Alice Nicholson; lone hands, Lois Chamney; low, Jane Grasby; high man, Stewart Musgrove; second high man, Jim Coultes; lone hands, Allen Edgar; low man, Ken Spears. Colleen Irwin of Port Carling recently spent a few days with her mother Betty Irwin.
