Total approach team plans open The Total Approach Initiative team studying the Lower Blyth Brook is inviting residents to attend an open house and community meet ing on Dec. 5. The open house will be held in the lower meeting room of Blyth Memorial Hall from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The community meeting will run from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the same location. Alison Lobb, chair of the Total Approach Initiative, reports that the open house and community meeting have been planned to try and accom modate busy December schedules. “We realize that not everyone will be able to attend the evening meet ing. The open house is an opportuni ty for both rural and village residents to drop by and see how the project is progressing.” At both events team members will be sharing information on the results of water quality testing in the Blyth Brook and summarizing responses to the recent community survey on best management practices. Displays on a variety of topics relat ing to best management practices will also be on view. For example visitors will be able to get informa tion on the accomplishments and plans of the Blyth Community Greenway Committee, find out how to participate in the Environmental Farm Plan, and learn about tree planting services offered by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. The focus of the Total Approach Initiative is on improving water quality in the lower Blyth Brook by encouraging the adoption of best management practices by village and rural residents. Best manage ment practices are defined by the house Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs as “practical, affordable approaches to conserving soil, water and other natural resources in rural areas” including nutrient management and appropri ate cropping and tillage. The use of best management practices has proven environmental and economic benefits to landowners. The Total Approach team hopes that the open house and meeting will generate community interest in developing a strategy to support the adoption or continued use of best management practices along the Lower Blyth Brook. Everyone is welcome to attend. Light refresh ments will be served and visitors invited to enter the draw for a vari ety of door prizes.
