PAGE 28. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29, 2000. Student learns from co-op experience By Patricia Wil bee My name’s Mrs. Train and how do you do? I’d like to know what your name is too! Patricia, Patricia, that’s a nice name and that’s the way we play our game. If you were in Mrs. Train’s class, you’d know that’s the song we sing to introduce someone new to the Co-op placement leads way to career choice for student By Amy Ross Activation Do you know what the word means? It is the depart ment I work in. We spend our day organizing and performing activities with the residents in a nursing home. My name is Amy Ross. I am the daughter of Eric Ross and Jayne Ross both of Brussels; I am a Grade 12 student of F. E. Madill Secondary School where I am currently enrolled in the co-operative educa tional program. My co-op placement is at Huronlea Home for the Aged in Brussels. My supervisors are Steve Cook and Shirley Robinson. I start the day by listing the activi ties we have planned on the dry class. My name is Patricia Wilbee and I am currently enrolled in the co-oper ative program at F. E. Madill Secondary School. My placement is at the Wingham Public School in Mrs. Train’s class with the special needs children. Every day, we try to spend time with a different child because each child has different needs. Some chil dren require you to communicate with them through sign language or pictures, so it’s good experience working with all the different chil dren in our class. Some of the things we assist the children in are: doing crafts, singing erase boards located around the building. Then we spend some time doing restorative care with the resi dents to get them moving body limbs that are suffering from health prob lems. For the rest of the morning we spend the time doing certain activi ties that involve all of the residents’ interests. Sometimes we get the resi dents performing daily routine chores like washing dishes or fold ing laundry. Other activities include going for walks, listening to local talent, staying fit with Nelva, and baking with Chen. I have also observed the planning of the November calendar and put some ideas into that. I have decided that this would be a great career choice after I am done going to college for recreational and leisure services. I recommend that every student join the co-operative education program to gain experi ence in a career field they are unsure of. I did, and it worked. and learning new songs, cooking, helping them swim when we go to Vanastra, or simply playing with them at recess. Since I began my placement in September, I have been able to observe the ways in . which Mrs. Train and the EAs in the class deal with all the children in different situ Hands-on learning benefits youth By Jamie Hiusser Helio. My name is Jamie Hiusser. I am currently enrolled in a co-op place ment at Canadian Tire. It teaches me a lot of different things. It teaches me customer service, hands-on training, and how to perform several tasks. I am excited to be in the co-op pro gram, and am learning a lot. They have also been helping me to learn the different signs that are used to communicate with the children who are unable to speak. So far, I have really enjoyed work ing with all the children and I look Eric, They have taught me more than I could have ever imagined, in such a short time. I have assisted in various tasks, from flat tire repair to a trans mission change, and can now do an oil change by myself, in no time at all. My “boss” doesn’t actually seem like a boss at all. He is a generally a nice guy, who knows all of his employees by name and treats them as an equal. He knows me by name and has since the day of my inter view. I chose co-op because it does exactly what I thought it would, giv ing me experience in customer serv ice, routine work, and more intricate repairs. It has taught me time man fZ^Omni Insurance Brokers Save 20-40 /o on your auto insurance and more on other insurance services * Free No Obligation Quote Paul Hallahan R.R. #3 Blyth (519) 523-9110 Fax: (519) 523-9278 Clinton Office: (519) 482-3434 , Pager 1-888-489-2570 j email:phallahan@odyssey.on.ca forward to all the new things I’m sure to learn in the following months.
