Palliative Care, a support Wingham and Area Palliative Care Services is a volunteer-based organi zation which helps to meet the increasing need for support during a challenging time for critically ill clients and their families. Due to an increasing number of clients who choose to remain at home during their illness, shrinking health care funding, and many demands on fam ily members, palliative care volun teers have never been more valued and needed. Volunteers with Wingham and Area Palliative Care Services pro vide support to clients and their fam ilies from the time a referral is given, through death, until bereavement support is finished (a year or more as needed). Prospective volunteers are required to participate in a 10-week training program which covers issues such as the philosophy of care, communication strategies, pain and symptom control, bereavement issues, social and spiritual issues, community resources and care of the caregiver plans. The goal of Wingham and Area Palliative Care is not to replace existing services such as nursing or Check out our WEBSITE at www.northhuron.on.ca for grieving homemaking, but to compliment them by filling the gaps and provid ing support. Many of the volunteers have had personal experiences of loss which help them to relate well to the client’s needs. If you would like to know more about Wingham and Area Palliative Care Services, or would like to refer a client, please call 357-2720. If your group would like to have a speaker, or you would like to become a volunteer please contact the office, located in the Wingham and District Hospital.
