Sports Bly th PeeWee Dogs just miss in close match with Hensall On Thursday, Nov. 23 the Blyth PeeWee Bulldogs welcomed Hensall to town. The first few minutes were played mainly in the neutral zone with nei ther team gaining momentum. Hensall came on to take the lead beating Blyth netminder Jeff Elliott mid-way in the opening period. The Bulldogs were able to gain the tie in the second when Kyle Procter rifled a slapshot that bounced off the Hensall goalie and Darcey Cook picked up the rebound to slip it by. Blyth moved into the lead when Darren Austin scored off a pass from Brett Beane and James Durrell. Hensall then came bouncing back squeaking one by Elliott. The Bulldogs were given a glori ous opportunity mid-way through the final period when Hensall ran into penalty trouble giving Blyth a two-man advantage. The Bulldogs assembled a constant attack but were turned away with some splendid goaltending in the Hensall cage. Hensall was returned the favour sporting a two-man advantage of their own in the closing minutes of the game. The Hensall team cashed in with 1:18 left to take a 3-2 lead. The Bulldogs pulled the goalie in the final minute and swarmed the Hensall net. Beaner took a feed from Cook with five seconds to go and should have gained Blyth the tie if not for a spectacular save by the Hensall backstopper. The end result was a 3-2 win for Hensall but a very entertaining game for fans for both teams. Saugeen-Maitland Lightning pulls out a win in Strathroy The Saugeen-Maitland Girls trav elled to Strathroy for a rematch with Bluewater on Nov. 25. The Lightning was looking a little travel-weary for the first half of the period but got back on track when Brittany Roberts trickled one through the goalie’s pads to open the score with assists by Heather Walker and Jessica Mann. Saugeen’s defence got caught pinching and the resulting two-on- * one proved costly after Terri Allen made the first save but Bluewater fired the rebound over her out stretched glove to tie the game in the second period. With passes from Walker and Katie Whytock, Crystal Ferguson swept in to put Saugeen ahead early in the third. End-to-end play contin ued and hustle paid off when Whytock beat the defence and fed the puck to Walker to add the insur ance goal with two minutes remain ing to win 3-1. The Lightning heads to Stouffville for a tournament in early December and ren,ain idle until then.
