Exeter’s normally busy downtown
was even busier Saturday morning
when Canadian Alliance party leader
Stockwell Day and his entourage
made a campaign stop on Main
Street.
Day spoke to a crowd of nearly
200 farmers, Alliance party support
ers, national media and South Huron
residents.
Huron County farmers were a sig
nificant presence with their large
signs calling for agricultural support
equity with American farmers.
Huron County Federation of
Agriculture past-president Pat Down
of Usborne Twp. said the federation
is treating all party leaders equally
by showing up at their campaign
stops. Farmers also greeted
Progressive Conservative leader Joe
Clark in Listowel Saturday.
HCFA director Wayne Hamilton
said Day has stated he’s behind
Canadian farmers but still hasn’t
given them a dollar figure.
Farmers are asking for $300 mil
lion for Ontario farmers and $ l .7 bil
lion across Canada to bring the sup
port in line with American support of
farmers.
“All we want is to be competitive
with the U.S.,” Hamilton said, noting
Canadian support for farmers has
been falling behind U.S. support for
three years and is $200 per acre
behind the U.S.
Hamilton said consumers, not just
farmers, are being affected.
“It’s the other 98 per cent of the
population that should be upset by
short-sighted agriculture policy,” he
said.
During his speech, Day said the
Alliance will get funding distributed
to farm families quickly, referring to
the delays in payouts of farm income
support programs. He criticized the
Liberal government for announcing
their support for farmers only days
before the election.
“We are here for farm families all
year long,” Day said.
Without giving specifics, he prom
ised his government would reduce
input costs and user fees farmers pay
for government programs.
Day said he wanted value-added
processing of farm products and a
better transportation system devel
oped in Canada.
Day then went on to attack Prime
Minister Jean Chretien for his
involvement in securing a loan from
the Business Development Bank for
a friend.
“It seems like when it comes to
getting help, Jean Chretien has a
two-tier system — one for friends
and one for others,” he said.
Day encouraged residents to sup
port Huron-Bruce Alliance candidate
Mark Beaven, saying he will make
an excellent Member of Parliament.
Day who had been scheduled to
walk from the former Canadian Tire
parking lot to Scotia Bank and back
but arriving 45 minutes late, opted to
stay at the south end of town.
Day and his wife Vai also visited
Ilderton and Goderich Saturday.
