Society
to plant
tulips
By Lois van Vliet
The Blyth Horticultural Society
held its fall meeting in the form of a
Christmas potluck supper Monday,
Nov. 13 at the Memorial Hall, with
about 23 members sitting down to a
delicious dinner.
Betty Battye, president, opened
with a brief business meeting. The
100 tulip bulbs donated to the socie
ty by the Blyth Legion will be plant
ed around the trees at the pump
house and at the windmill.
Harvey Snell, assistant director
for the Ontario Horticultural
Association, District 8, brought
greetings, reporting on the fall meet
ing held in Brussels, Oct. 14. The
spring annual meeting will be held
in Chesley, April 28. The theme will
be, Come Walk in My Garden.
Dan Taylor introduced the guest
speaker, Susan Hay of Clinton. She
talked about Naturalized
Landscaping. She said that some
times it confuses people as to what it
means. It promotes the use of less
water and less toxic chemicals, mak
ing better habitat for small animals,
birds, butterflies, etc., she said.
She added that thousands of urban
gardeners are using so much toxic
spray on their lawns (more than used
on farms) it is seriously affecting
groundwater. The Monarch butterfly
is almost becoming extinct because
of toxic chemicals, she said.
Mrs. Hay had some interesting
colour slides showing steps in plan
ning a backyard sanctuary. This
would attract butterflies, humming
birds, toads, etc.
Special musical entertainment
was provided by Annie Sparling’s
voice students: Victoria Rodgers,
Rose Wood, Heather Elliott and
Cassandra Irvin. They sang several
songs accompanied by Sharon
Jackson at the piano.
The Blyth Horticultural Society is
in dire need of more active mem
bers. There are only approximately
six one-hour meetings a year.
Anyone interested in joining and/or
helping, phone Betty Battye, 523-
9658.
Christmas treats
It was Blyth’s big Christmas celebration kick-off on Friday night and while parents were busy
shopping or taking in the house tour, children enjoyed the cider and goodies offered at
Memorial Hall. The arrival of some winter weather set the tone for horse drawn wagon rides
while putting everyone in the mood to get started on their shopping. (Vicky Bremner photo)
As the Federal Election is only
five days away, I have some impor
tant news pertaining to all eligible
voters. If your address has not been
updated or if someone did not
receive the card entitling them to
vote on Nov. 27, it can be dealt with
on election day, as it is now too late
to be changed. Many complications
have occurred due to the fact that the
911 system recently came into effect
in our area. In turn, you will notice
that your address no longer coincides
with the information that was previ
ously sent to you.
When you come to the gymnasium
at Blyth Public School to vote,
please bring your card proving you
are registered to vote. Because of the
error in updating, please have two
forms of identification with you, for
example your driver’s licence, social

They will then be able to update the
information to the head office.
If you did not receive the card
needed, then this will also be dealt
with in the same fashion so that you
have the right to fill out a ballot. See
you then.
Democracy is a form of govern
ment in which political power
resides in all the people and is exer
cised by them directly. This is what
our country fought hard for. The
upcoming federal election gives you
that opportunity to use your power.
If you do not vote then you have no
right to complain about the outcome
or anything that occurs afterwards.
So, please make note - GET OUT
AND VOTE.
