Betty Battye, president, opened with a brief business meeting. The 100 tulip bulbs donated to the socie ty by the Blyth Legion will be plant ed around the trees at the pump house and at the windmill. Harvey Snell, assistant director for the Ontario Horticultural Association, District 8, brought greetings, reporting on the fall meet ing held in Brussels, Oct. 14. The spring annual meeting will be held in Chesley, April 28. The theme will be, Come Walk in My Garden. Dan Taylor introduced the guest speaker, Susan Hay of Clinton. She talked about Naturalized Landscaping. She said that some times it confuses people as to what it means. It promotes the use of less water and less toxic chemicals, mak ing better habitat for small animals, birds, butterflies, etc., she said. She added that thousands of urban gardeners are using so much toxic spray on their lawns (more than used on farms) it is seriously affecting groundwater. The Monarch butterfly is almost becoming extinct because of toxic chemicals, she said. Mrs. Hay had some interesting colour slides showing steps in plan ning a backyard sanctuary. This would attract butterflies, humming birds, toads, etc. Special musical entertainment was provided by Annie Sparling’s voice students: Victoria Rodgers, Rose Wood, Heather Elliott and Cassandra Irvin. They sang several songs accompanied by Sharon Jackson at the piano. The Blyth Horticultural Society is in dire need of more active mem bers. There are only approximately six one-hour meetings a year. Anyone interested in joining and/or helping, phone Betty Battye, 523- 9658. Christmas treats It was Blyth’s big Christmas celebration kick-off on Friday night and while parents were busy shopping or taking in the house tour, children enjoyed the cider and goodies offered at Memorial Hall. The arrival of some winter weather set the tone for horse drawn wagon rides while putting everyone in the mood to get started on their shopping.
