At the Branch Members saddened by loss of two comrades By Jo-Ann McDonald Again this past week the Comrades of the Brussels Legion Branch were saddened by the news of the passing of two of its own. Comrade Ross Duncan passed away Friday as well as Comrade Vince Marion. The Legion service was observed for Comrade Duncan on Sunday evening. Our condolences to both families. Friday night supper was delicious roast beef and this week beer sausage and sauerkraut. Saturday was the Remembrance Day service at the Branch. A nice crowd was on hand to witness the tribute to our fallen comrades and to those who remain. Our veterans are getting older and fewer as seen by those on hand, but have the will to attend this most important service. A brisk wind was blowing to remind us all of the hardships endured by our comrades during their service in the war. A wonderful service at Brussels United Church conducted by Joan Golden and Joan Tuchlinsky followed the cenotaph service at 11 a.m. The two minutes of silence and a time for reflection was observed by all in attendance. Euchre was hosted upstairs at the Branch and 14 tables were in play. The first place winners were Neil Hatt and Edna McLellan. Following in second were Isabelle and Shirley and third place was a tie between Ed Stewart and Harvey Edgar and Charlie and Millie Pollock. The lucky lone hand winners were Jim Coultes and Mary Davidson. Local businesses that decorated their storefront windows for Remembrance Day were wonderful. We thank them for their efforts to promote Remembrance Day in people’s minds and memories. The Brussels Legion offered prizes, that would be donated to Brussels Community Groups in the winning business’ name. The participating businesses and winners were The Citizen, Oldfield Pro Hardware, Just For You Flowers and Gifts and the Thrift Store. Comrade Al Nichol is in hospital and we are still thinking of him and hoping a return to better health. Sunday night singles dance celebrated its third anniversary with a record crowd that enjoyed a delicious lunch and anniversary cake. Our wonderful volunteers, comrades Julie Harrison, Cathy Snyder, Howard and Audrey Hackwell are to be congratulated on a job well done in looking after these dances every two weeks. Anyone who would like to help these people Remember regular meetings are out on a regular basis please call the the fourth Monday of the month and Branch and let us know. all comrades are welcome to attend.
