Brussels Novices add to loss column Though the Brussels Novices played well, keeping Zurich off the board for the first period, another mark went in the loss column after Saturday morning’s match-up. Ryan Smith was excellent in net, stopping many shots in close and keeping his team in the game. Evan Ducharme and Taylor Prior did some good puck handling around the crease early in the first in support of Smitn. Cody Subject worked hard to take the puck the full length of the ice, but Blake Cardiff’s shot was grabbed Blyth Novices upset by seasoned Mitchell squad On Saturday. Nov. 4 Blyth Novice Hockey team travelled to Mitchell for the first game of the season. The first period ended with a score of 3-1 in favour of of Mitchell with Kenny Plunkett netting an unassisted goal. Blyth tightened up the score in the second with a goal by Tyler Middegaal assisted by Mat Stevenson and Plunkett. The team seemed to lose their legs in the third as Mitchell scored four unanswered goals to leave the score at 7-2 in their favour. Sheldon Reid played a solid game in net fending off numerous shots. This was Mitchell’s sixth game of the season so given more games Blyth is sure to give them a good run next match. On Wednesday, Nov. 8 the team travelled to Bayfield. Reid, in net, held the game at no score for the first period as he dodged many shots from Bayfield. Colin Bokhout started the scoring with an unassisted goal in the sec­ ond. Minutes later he passed off Plunkett to put the score at 2-0 for Blyth. The third period saw lots of action in both ends to keep the fans on their feet. Dallas Pennington scored with by the nimble netminder for Zurich. Robert Cronin had a nice play on defence, stopping two attackers and allowing Smith to smother the shot. The opponent broke the scoreless tie in the second, slipping one past Smith. They tallied four unanswered goals in spite of several attempts by Brussels. Good defencive plays were made by Joel Wilkinson, Prior and Subject. It was the second loss of the week for the squad having been downed by Mount Forest on Tuesday. Michael McDowell and Daniel Elliott assisting then Bayfield fol­ lowed with two goals to make the final score 4-2 in favour of Blyth. To finish up a busy first week of hockey Blyth travelled to Milverton on Friday, Nov. I0. Milverton scored one goal in the first and three in the second. Bokhout scored an unassisted goal at the beginning of the third to put Blyth on the scoreboard, but Milverton came on strong scoring four more goals in the third. The final score was 8-1 Milverton. The next game will be in Blyth on Wednesday, Nov. 15. PeeWee The Blyth PeeWee Bulldogs took to the ice Tuesday. Nov. 7. Elma Logan opened the scoring early in the first period. Blyth tied it minutes later when Darren Austin found the net, assisted by Brett Bean. J The Elma Logan team regained the lead but Kyle Nixon tied it up again setup by Brittney Peters and Levi Cook with seconds to go in the first. Austin put the Bulldogs in the lead snapping a long shot by the Elma Logan goaltender early in the sec­ ond. Bean drew the assist. Elma Logan tied it again only to have Cook smack a Darcey Cook rebound into the Elma Logan net to put the Bulldogs back into the lead. Orie Falconer got the other assist. The home team came on strong scoring a goal at 4:53 and again with 40 seconds to go to take back the lead. Elma Logan had the benefit of the powerplay to start the third period and took full advantage of it with a goal. Elma Logan added three more, before Darcey Cook provided some spark notching a long-wrister past the Elma Logan netminder. Elma Logan closed things outscoring with 51 seconds left to claim a 10-5 victo­ ry- On Thursday, Nov. 9 Mitchell came to town to face the Bulldogs. Chris Bernard held the hot hands in this game. Austin cruised in on the right wing and rifled a shot at the net. Bernard was alert slapping in the rebound off the Mitchell netminder. Mitchell pulled even 21 seconds later sneak­ ing one by Jeff Elliott in the Bulldog net. Mitchell took the lead again' Brussels PeeWees shutout Ho'wick The Brussels PeeWees trounced their opponent Nov. 10 when they rolled over Howick 7-0. Kyle Gibson made some great saves in net to earn the shutout. Brent Wheeler beat the goalie in the first period, with the help of Matt White. The squad broke it open in the sec­ ond, tallying four off the sticks of Phil Wedow, Matt McClinchey, White and Adam McClure. Assists went to McClinchey, Tyler Jutzi and While. White struck for his second netter at 13:30 of the third when he picked up a pass from McClure and Wheeler. Wheeler topped off the scoring at 9:29 with an assist going to Jutzi. Bulldogs snapping a shot out of Elliott’s reach. The visitors added to their lead at 13:20 of the second making the score 3-1. Mitchell continued its assault on the Blyth net going up 4-1 and regis­ tering the final goal of the second period. An inspired Bulldog team hit the ice in the third period. Bernard notched his second of the night off another Austin rebound at the 11:31 mark. Austin scored one on a quick shot that found its way behind the Mitchell goalie at 9:04 to close the gap to one. Josh Albrechtas assisted on the play. Blyth was unsuccessful in its bid to gain the tie in spite of out-shooting their opponents by a wide margin in the third. Elliott made several splen­ did saves giving the Bulldogs a chance at the comeback. The defen­ sive tandems of Peters and Albrechtas and Kendall Whitfield and Kyle Procter kept the Mitchell forwards at bay. Sunday, Nov. 12 the Bulldogs trav­ elled to Goderich for an exhibition match. The home team was first to find the back of the net at 8:29 of the first period. The Blyth line of Bean, Austin and James Durrell had numerous chances but failed to find the mark. Goderich added to its lead with a goal at the 6:24 of the second. Austin put the Bulldogs on the board on a nice feed by Cook and Whitfield with only one second to go. The Bulldogs put on all kinds of pressure while enjoying a two-player advantage but were unable to beat the Goderich goaltender. Goderich found the net once more with just under three minutes to go on a quick high wrist shot to the top corner. Blyth was penalized with a penalty shot for a player stopping the puck in the crease with 26 seconds remaining in the game. The Cat Elliott displaying his quick reflexes blocked his oppo­ nents’ shot giving the Bulldogs another chance for the tie.
