IT IS HELD EVERY NOVEMBER 11. On Remembrance Day - November 11 - at 11:00 a.m., we pause for ”2 Minutes of Silence” to honour the men and women who served our country for the cause of freedom. We wear a poppy, which was adopted for symbolic purposes after the First World War, as a reminder of those who died fighting for peace. The Peacekeeping Monument in Ottawa recognizes the service of Canadian Forces. It is the first monument of its kind in the world. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial in Ottawa is a Government of Canada millennium initiative and represents our country’s commitment to peace and freedom in the past, in the present and in the future. Of these, over 66,000 were killed. »• At the Battle of the Somme the British Forces suffered their heaviest one-day loss ever, over 57,000 men. More than 700 men from the Newfoundland regiment were killed or injured during this battle. Four Canadians were awarded the Victoria Cross, the Commonwealth s highest award for bravery, for their part in the taking of Vimy Ridge. Canadian John McCrae wrote the poem "In Flanders Fields" while on the battlefields. Approximately 14,000 Canadians landed at Normandy on D-Day. >- The 1st Canadian Army was instrumental in the liberation of Holland in May 1945. 2> Over one million Canadians served in the Second World War and approximately 45,000 gave their lives. 2* Canada's navy was the third largest in the allied forces, and its airforce was the fourth largest. 2* By the end of the Second World War, Canada's navy had more than 113,000 personnel, including over 7,000 women.
