Legion, Auxiliary attend Blyth United service It was Remembrance Sunday at Blyth United Church on Nov. 5. The Legion/Auxiliary Branch 420 was present for the service. Greeters were Brenda Brooks, Nicole, Colton and Kelsey Kerr. Ushers were Rick, Anne, Heather and Jeff Elliott. Organist was Lynda Lentz. Michelle McNichol was in charge of the nurs ery. Susan Howson read the Gospel lesson, Mark 9: 38-50. The theme of the sermon was At War with Sin: How to have True Peace. Rev. Ernest Dow talked of how Canadians are fortunate to have not experienced war in half a centu ry. However, in this country, he explained, there is a war of a differ ent kind,” a war against sin and evil.” Rev. Dow spoke of how both moral sin and prejudice are enemies that seek to invade society. He reminded the congregation about how the servicemen and women who fought in the wars “give us an example of just how far we can go in opposing evil, how ready we can be (with God’s help) to lay down our life in resisting sin and oppres sion.” Rev. Dow said, “This week we remember and honour such troops who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedom, such as the right to meet in public as a Christian church.” He closed the service by telling the story of Esther from the Bible. Terry Richmond, Rick, Anne and Heather Elliott collected the offering. The closing hymn was F.ght the Good Fight. The congregation was reminded that next Sunday is Dedication Sunday for Operation Christmas Child ShoeBoxes. As well next Sunday there is a meeting after worship to discuss par ticipation in the upcoming Christmas parade. Next Sunday evening’s guest speaker is Kirk Durston of New Scholar Society. Bev and Alex Blair win first early bird draw Bev and Alex Blair of Blyth were ets in Saturday’s first early bird winners of 10-free Sweepstakes tick- bonus drawing in the Blyth Bulldogs Vandals strike It has been with dismay that Brussels residents have viewed the gazebo in Homecoming Park since vandals have been repeatedly since June been damaging spindles from the side railings. The village has installed a light on the park property at a cost of $286, which will hopefully be a deter rent. A $100 reward has been posted for the apprehension of those involved. Hockey WIN! WIN! Sweepstakes. Organizers Dwight Chalmers, Todd MacDonald and Steven Sparling are encouraged by the early response to the Sweepstakes: over 560 tickets were purchased by Saturday. “Thanks to the hard work and gen erosity of people in the community, we are between two and three weeks ahead of where we were last year. We’re working hard to sell out early,” said Steven Sparling. People are buying tickets this year for three main reasons: the Cruiser is the hottest new vehicle to be launched in years; many are becom ing aware of the renovations neces sary at the community centre; and tickets make unique Christmas gifts (the grand prize drawing for a loaded 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser Limited Edition valued at approximately $32,000 will be held at 10 a.m. Christmas Day). “In fact, we scheduled the date of the grand prize drawing this year in response to buyers who said they would like to give tickets as gifts,” said Chalmers. Only 1,500 tickets will be sold, so the odds of winning are great and unlike many vehicle draws, the grand prize winner only needs to bring a license plate to the dealer ship. “The winner of the Cruiser will pick the colour - we will pay the taxes,” said MacDonald. Early Bird bonus prizes, including Leafs tickets, a limited edition authentic autographed print, and an authentic autographed Curtis Joseph Leafs’ jersey are now on display in the north window at Black Creek Clothing, Blyth. The second early bird bonus drawing will be held Saturday, Nov. 18. The prize is two tickets to a Toronto Maple Leafs game in January 2001.
