Win a Cruiser
for Christmas
Last year, the first annual Blyth
Bulldogs WIN! WIN! Sweepstakes
was held to establish the Blyth and
District Community Centre Capital
Fund, in preparation for the inevitable
capital projects at the Centre. The first
sweepstakes netted over $22,000.
Dwight Chalmers, Todd
MacDonald and Steven Sparling are
at it again and have organized the sec
ond annual sweepstakes. This year,
only 1500 tickets are available at $50
per ticket for a chance to win a fully-
loaded, 2001 Chrysler PT Cruiser
Limited Edition.
“Just like last year, the odds are
great,” said Chalmers, “the winner
chooses the colour and we pay the
taxes.”
The grand prize drawing will be
held Christmas Day. Someone will
win a Cruiser for Christmas.
There are also four early-bird bonus
drawings, the first one will be held
Saturday, Nov. 4 for 10 free
Sweepstakes tickets. Other early-bird
bonus prizes include: Maple Leafs
tickets; an authentic autographed
print signed by Maurice Richard,
Frank Mahovolich and Johnny
Bower; and an authentic autographed
Curtis Joseph jersey.
“Ticket sellers are out in full force
in the area,” said MacDonald, “and
based on the tremendous community
support last year, we hope to sell out
this year.”
Visa and Mastercard orders can be
placed by calling Jim Gilmore at 523-
4256, ext. 29.
War Amps new video
tells story of nation’s
‘earlier D-Day’
The War Amps is releasing a new
video in its NEVER AGAIN! series
just in time for Remembrance Day.
A War of Their Own: The
Canadians in Sicily and Italy is com
prised of two parts, each 60-minutes
in length. Part I: Sicily to Ortona,
which has just been released, covers
the campaign from the Sicily inva
sion to the battle for Ortona and has
now been released to community
channels across Canada. It will also
air on Global TV and the Prime spe
cialty channel on Nov. 11.
Part II: The D-Day Dodgers fol
lows the Canadians as they take part
in the battles in Northern Italy such
as the Gothic Line, Coriano Ridge
and the Savio River. It will be
released in December.
The series shows how the
Canadians' in Sicily and Italy faced
tremendous odds never before expe
rienced by the Canadian Army and
developed innovative techniques to
fight in an inhospitable terrain
against an experienced enemy force
during almost two years of steady
fighting.
“Canada’s role in the D-Day land
ings in Normandy is the stuff of leg
ends,” said War Amps Chief
Executive Officer Cliff Chadderton,
who wrote and produced the video.
“A War of Their Own” tells the story
of another D-Day almost a year ear
lier - on July 10, 1943, when
Canadian troops landed on the south
ern shores of Sicily.”
“From there,” he said, “the
Canadians, as part of the famous
British 8th Army - earned respect as
a distinct force as they made their
way over the mountainous island,
across the Messina Strait and up the
Italian mainland.”
Chadderton added that the
Canadian battles in this theatre were
front-page news. Italy, however,
became the forgotten front once the
world turned its attention on the
long-awaited storming of France.
“It should never be forgotten that
93,000 Canadians fought their way
toward Rome and beyond and that
almost 6,000 are buried in cemeter
ies from Sicily to Northern Italy,”
Chadderton said.
“The Canadians in Italy, in a ques
tionable jest, were called the D-Day
Dodgers. The implication: they were
avoiding the “real” war in France.
“A War of Their Own “puts their
achievements into perspective,” he
added.
The two-part series, like all War
Amps videos, was funded through
corporate donations. It is available
