Blyth minister talks of stewardship
The theme of the Blyth United
Church service, Sunday, was Hot for
God: Love offers the Time of your
Life.
Rev. Ernest Dow talked about
“stewardship of our time, our life
and the gift of our abilities, how love
translates into what we do.” He
explained how God does not want
money, he wants people. He
explained how stewardship of life
and time begins with looking at the
“greatest commandment”. The com
mandment is “love the Lord your
God with all your heart and with all
your soul and with all your mind and
with all your strength ... Love your
neighbour as yourself.” •
Throughout the service Rev. Dow
compared his experience of recently
repairing a water heater, with how
people can demonstrate this love of
God.
“Love the Lord your God with all
your heart.” The heart in this case
refers to affections, emotions,
appetites, and passions. “Love God
with all your soul”. The soul is the
centre of our desires, aversions, our
will, commitments and priorities.
Rev. Dow compared our soul to a
button that you push to start our
commitment to God. It resets our
attitudes, beliefs and values. “Love
God with all your mind.” The mind
refers to your “thoughts, understand
ing and imagination.”
“Love God with all your strength.”
Rev. Dow talked about how “Jesus
calls us to love the Father with our
physical nature - our force, power,
ability.”
“Love your neighbour as your
self’. Rev. Dow talked about how
“we seek to discover the joy of help
ing with another’s need.” Rev. Dow
told a story about a little boy who
had worked very hard to make
enough Valentines, he was not disap
pointed. He was happy and excited
because as he said “I didn’t forget a
one, not a single one.”

UCW hears wartime story
The Blyth United Church UCW
met in the church parlour, Tuesdav,
Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. The theme of the
meeting was Remembering.
Candice Howson and Joann
McDonald were in charge of the
worship. They told the story of
Evangeline Booth, daughtei of
William and Catherine Bo< th.
founders of the Salvation Army.
Edelgard Hoba told her story of a
childhood, in what is now Poland,
during World War II. She had just
started school in September of 1939,
when war broke out.
The Oder River became, after the
war, a permanent borderline between
Poland and what became East
Germany.
Their father was drafted into the
army and their mother had to run the
farm and look after their four chil
dren.
For four months in 1945, they
lived in the Russian Army Combat
Zone. The Russian soldiers were
allowed to do anything they liked to
them.
On May 1, 1945, the Red Army
stormed Berlin ending the war. The
family was then ordered to evacuate.
When they reached Berlin, they were
starving and so was Berlin.
After being told they would be
taken to West Germany, they board
ed a cattle car at the train station; but
ended up in a former prison camp
miles away from the West German
border. The mother had hidden some
money in a pouch around the
youngest boy’s neck, and was able to
pay a farmer to smuggle them to
Wes': Germany.
On Nov. 20, 1945, the family
arrived on a cousin’s doorstep at last.
Susan Howson, wearing a poppy
with a cross, showed a video,
Canada Remembers. The cross rep
resents Christ as well as the crosses
in rows in military cemeteries.
There will be a white afghan,
donated to the UCW in the narthex
for a silent auction.
The next meeting is Nov. 28 at 7
p.m. in the Sunday School auditori
um. It will be a potluck meal and
meeting.
A tree will be set up in the narthex
for gifts to the Children’s Aid
Society. These will be dedicated with
the white gifts.
Lunch was served by Vera
Hesselwood, Janet Lawrie and Elsie
Walsh.
