Baan family greets at Duffs United
Teresa Baan and her children,
Allison, Scott and Craig, were
greeters at Duff’s United Church on
Oct. 29.
After announcements guest
speaker Margaret Hem called the
young worshippers forward and
asked them if they knew what a
miracle was. She had her bag of
goodies and from her bag she
handed out some acorns. After
asking them what was inside, the
children realized that the small
miracle inside was a tree.
She gave a few more examples of
miracles, then showed them a bag of
popcorn yet to be popped. They
agreed that once the kernels were
cooked it changed into something
delicious to eat.
Her sermon was called, What’s in
a Miracle? She said that miracles
don’t have to be big things, that
sometimes they can be as small as a
seed that grows into a tree. It could
be joy in the midst of sorrow, the
birth of a child, the first steps of a
toddler, etc.
But sometimes people miss so
much as they stand around waiting
for miracles to happen. They spend
free time watching TV, or complain,
wish for things, drag their feet and
miss the first signs of spring, or
don’t see the rainbow after the rain,
or the child that sang like an angel at
the school Christmas play, or play

If you haven’t found out yet who
the mysterious leaf rakers were last
week I will say this much - one of
them was reported to look
suspiciously like the United Church
minister. And when questioned
about the event, youth leader
Shannon Gibbons could not explain
the leaves in her hair or the yellow
garbage bag full of leaves in her
hand.
It was also quite coincidental that
the youth group was enjoying an
early breakfast at the church that
very same morning.
Haunted House number three at
the Walton Hall was a great success
last Friday. It frightened quite a few,
at least 45 kids. It was rather
unnerving to go down a dark hall
with a moving floor only to be met
by a grim reaper. And if that wasn’t
bad enough, around the comer was a
mean witch who attacked kids with a
snake and tried to put them in her
stew pot. Then they were pushed
into the next room where they met
up with two ghoulish-looking men
that showed them their monsters
kept in a glass cage on the floor.
When the light shone on them it was
enough to evoke many a scream
from the visitors.
On the guests went walking
through a maze until they were
scared by the body in the casket in
the graveyard. They were then met
by a hideous looking rat keeper. He
kept his rats in a pen and offered

them to anyone interested. He did
not get rid of one rat that night.
Continuing down the corridor,
visitors met face to face with a cow’s
head in the Road Kill Cafe. Eyes still
intact it was enough to kill any kind
of appetite, although it didn’t seem
to bother the two patrons eating at
the table. The counter was filled
with all kinds of ‘ahem’, edible
food. It even had a monster’s head
sticking out of the counter.
The folk had to finish their
journey by going through a tunnel.
They did not expect to be ambushed
by a demon in a white mask or run
through broken glass on the floor
(they were told it was glass). With
relief they made it upstairs where the
games and music and food made
them forget the horror they just lived
through.
Just think kids, Haunted House
number four will be even better.
Co-ordinator Shannon Gibbons
was pleased with the evening and
was very grateful to all those who
helped with the setting up and taking
down of the house.
Doug and Marjory Fraser just got
back from their trip to Branson,
Missouri. Doug said they had the
most wonderful time and saw some
great shows such as the Bobby
Vinton show where they were able to
get up and dance. They attended the
Welk show, the Jim Owen show, the
Shoji Tabuchi show and had dinner
on the Showboat Belle, where the
Frasers celebrated their 52nd
anniversary. They enjoyed great
weather and when asked which was
their favourite event, they said it was
all incredible.
Don’t forget to attend the Duff’s
United Church fowl supper on
Wednesday night at the Brussels
arena. Come out and enjoy the great
food prepared by some of the best
cooks in the county, maybe in the
whole country.
