Brussels girl on ice with Saugeen Maitland By Janice Becker Citizen staff The arena is like a second home for Brittany Kellington for when she is not playing for the Saugeen Maitland Women’s Bantam AA squad, she is serving up fries at the BMG arena in Brussels. Kellington, 15, has been playing hockey since the age of about three when she started as a Brussels Pre Tyke. After playing on the co-ed teams for seven years, Kellington began with an all girl’s team in Belgrave five years ago. Though she was also involved in figure skating, Kellington says her mother told her she was always eager to play hockey. “I just love it,” she smiles. “It is a lot of fun.” Noting that there were few girls playing hockey when she started, she says that is changing. “It is awesome now.” As a member of the Saugeen PeeWees in her second year of AA play, Kellington and the squad won the first ever Women’s Silver Stick. She likes playing with Saugeen Maitland because of the competitive ness and balanced skill level. “A lot of us are evenly (talented), she says, “even as scorers.” Dedicated to the sport, Kellington travels to the Howick Twp. arena for practices during the week then expects to play two games on the weekend. While home games are scheduled for Sundays at 11:30 a.m., the away games take them to Bluewater, London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Brantford, Hamilton, Rochester and Enjoying playing AA Brittany Kellington has been playing hockey for 12 years and is having a lot of fun as a member of the Saugeen Maitland Women’s Bantam AA squad. Buffalo. The team often spends Friday and Saturday on the road. The season for her AA Bantams is also long with Coach Andy Shedden’s training camp beginning by the end of July and play-offs fin ishing in late March or early April. Kellington doesn’t take much time off, playing baseball in the summer and going to sports camps. For young girls considering the hockey option, Kellington says, “Don’t be afraid and don’t listen to what the guys tell you. Do what you want to do. We can play hockey.” While she is happy to be playing with an all-girl squad, Kellington says starting with the boys was ben eficial. “They are more aggressive, but the girls are starting to do that too.” As for the future, she has two major goals. First, she is hoping to earn a scholarship and she wants to make it to the Olympics. Lightning rolls over Rochester In the first game of a double-head er on Oct. 29 in Howick, the Saugeen Maitland Bantam Lightning was kept scoreless by the Rochester team in the first period. Katie Whytock was left shaking her head after the sprawling visiting goalie reached up to snag what looked like a sure goal five minutes into the second period. On the next face-off, Candice Robertson found the comer through traffic after a pass to the point from Jocelyn Carter. Saugeen went up by two late in the second on a nice goal by Amanda Hill from Jackie Zacher. Heather Walker scored unassisted midway into the final period and put the game out of reach on a pass from Crystal Ferguson to end the match 4- 0. Terri Allen earned the shutout with shots 30-15 in favour of the Lightning in this penalty-free game. Rochester cracked the goose egg in just over a minute to the start of game two when a 30-footer alluded Allen’s trapper. Walker trickled one through the goalie 10 seconds later after passes from Brittany Roberts and Whytock and the period ended Knotted at one apiece. Captain Jessica Mann regained the lead, assisted by Robertson and Walker at the halfway mark and Zacher, from Roberts, added to the total to end the second period ahead 3-1. Saugeen Maitland added one more in the third period when a low shot by Hill deflected off the skate of Krista Cameron past the goalie for a final score 4-1.- The Lightning’s next game is Nov. 5 in Howick at 11:30 a.m. Township of North Huron Dedicated to Accountability, Affordability, Sustained Growth and Economic Diversity Tractors should only be occupied by ONE person, not more!
