Sports russels/Belgrave Bantams win opener The Brussels/Belgrave Bantam Women’s team hosted Lucan in their season opener Saturday, Oct. 28. The first period began with some close-checking. Brittany Campbell broke in alone and attempted to stuff a backhander by the Lucan netmin- der who made a brilliant save. However, with 7:32 to go Kristen Palmer got things moving as she cruised in on the left wing and fired a snappy wrist shot past the Lucan goalie to put the homeside up by one. In the second period Brussels/Belgrave took control. Ashley Ritchie, acting as a screen, slapped a backhander by the goalie off a rebound on a Kerri Meier shot from the point at 12:08. The Lucan squad would respond however at 8:28 to narrow the margin to one. Michelle Nixon put the homeside back up by two taking a nice feed from Campbell and bulging the twine at 5:25. The Ritchie and Meier combo teamed up once more to close out the second period. Meier wristed a hard shot at the net and Ritchie slapped home the rebound with 3:39 left. With Nicole Proctor in the penalty box to begin the third Michelle Cook burst around the Lucan defence and beat the goalie with a quick wrist shot to the blockerside for a short- handed tallie. Moments later Cook picked up the puck at the top of the faceoff circle and fired a high shot that the Lucan backstopper was able to tip by the net. The Brussels/Belgrave squad con tinued to apply pressure in the Lucan end of the fee but were not able to add to their lead ending the game with a 5-1 score. The Brussels/Belgrave Bantam Women’s team plays out of the South Lambton League under the direction of the OWHA. This allows these young women to play more competitive hockey and yet does not require the long distance of travel associated with other leagues. Members of the team are Michell Cook, Rachel Elliott, Sara McDonald, Brittany Campbel Nikki Berfeltz, Michelle Nixor Kerri Meier, Jenny Hopf, Nicol White, Kristen Palmer, Nicol Proctor, Ashley Ritchie and Daniell Good. Curlers plan for season PeeWee Reps lose to Elma-Logan, Drayton The Brussels PeeWee Reps were edged out of both games last week as they met Elma Logan and Drayton. After a great short-handed effort by Greg Bowers in the first, where he skated through the other team to score, Brussels found themselves down 2-1 late in the third. Bowers took a pass from Tyler Jutzi to tie the game at 5:36 but the squad could not hold on. Elma Logan scored the game winner less than a minute later. There was a good effort by every one. Brussels met Drayton Oct 27 and carried a 11 tie until the final min utes of play. Matt McClinchey had scored at 7:27 of the final frame to even the tally, but Drayton hit hard in the end, scoring two late netters for the 3-1 win. There was great goaltending by Kyle Nixon and many great scoring opportunities which the opposition netminders thwarted. With some better shooting the score could have been reversed.
