Area students among commencement recipients The Menzies recipients Graduates of Brussels Public School who received the George Menzies Endowment Fund at this year’s F.E. Friday evening was a time to renew friendships and receive awards as the F. E. Madill graduates gathered for commencement cere­ monies. Area students were among the many who received recognition for their efforts. Rachel McQuail, West Wawanosh, earned the OAC French proficiency award and the ABCD Award (Above and Beyond the Call of Duty) for her significant contribution to the school. The Stephanie Lea Henry Memorial Award for the Grade 12 graduate of Brussels Public School who has contributed positively to the academic, social and extra-curricular life at Madill went to Amy Douma. The Teachers-Festival Liaison Council Scholarship was awarded to Robin Sanders, East Wawanosh, for his exemplary contribution to drama projects at the school. Craig Fair, Bluevale, received the Blyth Festival Scholarship for the graduating student who has been involved in drama projects in sec­ ondary school and is proceeding to a post secondary theatrical program. The Michelle Kay Catherine Andrew Memorial Scholarship went to Sjaan Gerth, Belgrave, the top track and field athlete who has been accepted at a college or university. Crystal Semple, Grey Twp., received the Auxiliary to Wingham and District Hospital Award for the graduate with a sound academic background who has volunteered throughout their high school career and is entering training in a health- related field and the Student Trustee Award as representative on the Avon Maitland District School Board. One who received the S2 Award (Successful Stangs) was Melina Hussey, East Wawanosh. It is given to graduates who have made a posi­ tive contribution to the atmosphere at Madill. The MacTavish Award for Merit, for a deserving student, went to Darlene Hemingway, Grey Twp. Nicole Beer, Grey Twp., and Gavin Van Camp, East Wawanosh, were among those to receive the Wescast Industries Inc. award for two college students and two univer­ sity students who are furthering their education in foundry-related tech­ nology or business. Adria Graham, West Wawanosh, Justin Howatt, East Wawanosh. and Christa Smith, Brussels, received the F. E. Madill Secondary School Teaching Staff Award in recognition of deserving graduates who have demonstrated high scholastic stand­ ing and good school citizenship. The George Menzies Endowment Fund Awards for graduates of Brussels Public School with the highest averages in 11 senior courses that meet diploma and post second­ ary admission requirements went to Sarah Exel, Ashley Gropp, Katie Harrison, Kevin Mutter, Jenn McKercher, Mandy Sellers, Christa Smith and Matt Smith. Sjaan Gerth received the Grade 12 physical and health education award for the student who has excelled in every aspect of the Grade 12 pro­ gram including academics, leader­ ship, class achievement and school sports. The Clerk's Office in the Village of Blyth, the Township of East Wawanosh and the Town of Wingham shall be open for the purpose of approving proxy applications on Saturday, November 4, 2000 between the hours of 12 noon and 5:00 p.m. A person appointed a voting proxy shall complete an application in the prescribed form including a statutory declaration that the person is the person appointed as a voting proxy. A person appointed a voting proxy must be entitled to be an elector in the municipality. A person appointed as a proxy may only act for one person who is not a relative but can act as a proxy for any number of relatives (spouses, parents, children, grandparents and grandchildren). John Stewart, Returning Officer music was awarded to Mandy Sellers, Morris Twp. Aiming for the Top Tuition Scholarships from the Government of Ontario for high academic stand­ ing were earned by Katie Harrison, and Jenn McKercher. Mike Cowan, RR5, Brussels, received the John Stewart MacNaughton Memorial Award for the student who specialized in tech­ nical area, in particular, woodwork­ ing. Cindy Frieburger received the Garniss Family Award for the Belgrave-area resident who has exhibited good school citizenship and contributed positively to the community through involvement in community activities. Senior letters were awarded to Mike Cowan, Sarah Exel, Sjaan Gerth, Ashley Gropp, Darlene Hemingway, Melina Hussey, Rachel McQuail, Robin Sanders, Mandy Sellers, Crystal Semple and Gavin Van Camp. The Big M was present­ ed to students who earned three intermediate awards for scholastics, athletics and activities. Ryan Mawhinney, Brussels, earned the Maitland Women’s Institute Scholarship in Family Studies, given to the Grade 10 stu­ dent who has achieved proficiency in both academic and practical work in the basic Family Studies area. Heather Black, Belgrave, received a general proficiency award for Grade 10 and the Grade 9 Governor General’s Canadian History Medal for the Millennium.
