At the Branch 11 tables in play at euchre at Scrimgeour's By Jo-Ann McDonald What a busy weekend <at the Branch! Friday night supper had a good crowd enjoy “someone’s” famous beef stew. Next week is roast pork. Saturday afternoon euchre saw 11 tables of avid players. The best play­ ers of the day were Jeanne Ireland and Eluned McNair with 74 points. Close behind with 72 points were Cecil and Maxine Pollock. Tied for third place with 68 points were Gord and Louise Bosman and Dennis and Aileen Leddy. The lucky lone hand winner for ladies was Helen Casemore and for the men Norm Dobson. WI speaker tells orchard’s history The Majestic Women’s Institute met in the Brussels Library on Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m. In the absence of the president, Edna McLellan opened the meeting with a poem Family and Friends. Marie McCutcheon introduced the guest speaker, Boyd Taylor from Blyth. He gave a most interesting talk on the history of their apple orchard and on the different kinds of apples grown at their orchard. Their motto is “Good Measure and Quality. They were the first in this area to pack apples in plastic. In 2002 their enterprise will have its 150th birthday. The motto, An apple a day keeps the doctor away was given by Leona Armstrong. It was moved by Yvonne Knight and seconded by Ruth Bauer that a donation of $25 be given to the Brussels Legion. Alice Brothers will Euchre is every second Saturday. The non-smoking event is held downstairs. Close to 100 enjoyed the delicious breakfast Sunday. That same evening there was also over 100 on hand to dance to and enjoy the music of the Country Troubadours. Ken Scott will be here in two weeks to entertain. Edna McLellan gave a report on the Huron County rally which was held in Dashwood on Oct. 2. Sixty-six were in attendance at the rally. It was moved by Alice Brothers and seconded by Kathy Bridge that material for a quilt be purchased to be made this coming winter. Happy Birthday was sung to two members. Leona Armstrong introduced two guests Janice Forsyth and Marguerite Thomas. Roll call was roof downstairs. The membership early bird draws continue this month, so get in and pay your dues and get a chance to win your next year’s dues free. You can’t win if you don’t come in. Meat draws drew a good crowd and the craft show still needs door prizes. Mixed darts start Thursday nights and everybody is welcome. Call the Branch for more details.
