Shortly after closing on Saturday afternoon Linda Garland announced that the sale had brought in $19,400 before taxes. This was within $600 of what had been predicted by the head office in New Hamburg, thus they are “happy with the results.” A truly ecumenical effort with volunteers helping out from every church in Brussels, the sale also got assistance from outside the area with volunteers from Wingham, Wroxeter, Bluevale, Exeter, Dungannon and Oregon. (Vicky Bremner photo) From the Minister’s Study Music a wonderful force By Rev. Cathrine Campbell Melville, Brussels, Knox, Belgrave, Presbyterian Churches When I was a bit over 40 I took piano lessons. I learned much from this experience. There are people of infinite tact and patience, piano teachers, and, regardless of age, you must practise. Finally, the real reality was that I had no talent. This was quite disappointing for I now had a piano and had such high hopes (at the beginning) of dashing off rhapsodies and sonatas on same. However, this was not to be, and I had to return to my earlier incarna tion as an appreciative audience. I am extremely fond of music but my performing skills are minimal so I have developed my listening and appreciating skills instead. My delight, when I came to Brussels and Belgrave, was to find that there were real musicians seated at the keyboard in both churches. You have no idea how much that has meant to me over the past five years and how much I appreciated their talents and counsel. This year I am confronted with the death of Hazel Dalrymple and the retirement of Joanne King and extremely sad dened by the loss, to me personally, and to our churches. Music plays a large role in many Biblical stories and in the Christian life and in the Christian church. King David was celebrated as much for his musicianship as his military prowess and in fact it is his psalms that we still repeat and sing not the list of his accomplishments in battle. The following may not be one of David's psalms but it has a joyous call and cadence that invites us to praise and joy - with music. Praise the Lord, Praise God in His sanctuary Praise him in his mighty heavens Praise him for his acts of power Praise him for his surpassing great ness Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet. Praise him with the harp and lyre Praise him with tambourine and dancing Praise him with strings and flute Praise him with the clash of cym bals Praise him with resounding cym bals Let everything that has breath Praise the Lord Praise the Lord (Psalm 150) To the church there is a clear call to music and musicians and that is why it is so important in our worship life I believe the reason music plays such a large role is that it really is the stuff of celebration and we are always called to celebrate the work and world of our God. Even in the saddest times our music reminds us of the glory that is our Creator and compels us to lift our heads and to look up and then to give thanks. To be a performer of such life giv ing and soul inspiring moments is a true gift. In Hazel and Joanne we had and have people who would give us that needed lift, who devoted hours to study and teaching and who, when asked , would gently tell the minister that that particular tune was totally unsingable. When we participated in the cele bration of Hazel Dalrymple’s life some of the most moving moments were when former pupils of hers played and sang. In that moment we realized that even though the individ ual is no longer with us, the gifts have been passed on to another gen eration. Joanne King is “retiring” (just from being a full time organist) and so we at Melville are having a cele bration to honour her years of Ministry of Music at Melville. This will be on Sunday, Oct. 29 with the service at 2 p.m. One of the features of this worship service will be a mass choir composed of all those who have sung in the choir, junior or sen ior (no matter how brief their tenure) or performed solos with Joanne. Regardless, the call is being put out to all to tell friends and family of this special day and to come and SING. Music is a wonderful and powerful force and we are privileged to cele brate those who have talent and who share it. Thanks be to God.
