The Oil Can Man The Saugeen Maitland Women’s Bantam A A team headed to Buffalo for their season opener against the Buffalo Bisons. In a scoreless first period the Bisons pressed with a good portion of the play in the Lightning’s'end. By the end of the period, Saugeen was starting to get rolling and came close when Heather Walker (Durham) broke through the defence and the Bison’s goalie came up with a big save to keep the Lightning off the board. Early in the second, Candice Robertson (Harriston) closed the door a little too hard on the Bison winger breaking in along the boards and found herself sitting for two min utes. Buffalo tested a still in-progress penalty killing squad but the girls survived with solid net minding by Terri Allen (Walkerton). The game started to open up after that and after failing to capitalize on a Bison penalty earlier, Saugeen Maitland opened the scoring on a power play goal with 29 seconds left on the clock. With a feed from Jocelyn Carter, Walker (Southampton) went to the net with the puck, got a shot and amid sprawled bodies, Krista Cameron (Cargill) darted in and scooped the rebound over a crumpled goalie. Back and forth action in the third with close calls at both ends kept the tension high. Buffalo couldn’t get anything past Allen with a power play mid-way in the period and the Lightning won in a squeaker 1-0. The rest of the team comprises Brittany Roberts, Amanda Hill (Markdale), Katrina Whytock (Teeswater), Jessica Mann (Lucknow), Brittany Kellington (Brussels), Crystal Ferguson (Mount Forest), Bridget Shedden (Kincardine) and Jackie Zacher (Walkerton). Coaches are Andy Shedden and Jim Roberts. The Saugeen Maitland Women’s Hockey Association helps to provide a venue for the girls of Western Ontario to develop to the highest level of women’s hockey in Ontario at their age level. This isn’t possible in the small towns and communities because of their population levels. So if you’re going out for a drive this Sunday, Oct. 22 stop at the girls’ home rink at Howick Community Centre on Hwy. 87 between Fordwich and Gorrie and support the team who are hosting a double header with Niagara Falls at 11:30 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. Oil Undercoating Mobile Service (Individual & Commercial Vehicles) Scott Stevenson "Spring and Fall" RR #2 Auburn NOM 1E0 Call for appointment 519-526-7607 Blyth Industrial League season gets underway If just 1% more Canadians were physically active, annual savings in health-care costs could be as much as $12,000,000.
